In good old ‘Cuse, we’re well aware the weather is mostly an enemy. Winter drags on for months. The sun likes to wave goodbye in October and not come back until May when everyone’s heading home anyway. We all know when the sun first comes out when it’s supposedly spring and the temperature hits 48 degrees it’s a heat wave.
But just because it’s more warmth than we’re used to here, doesn’t mean you need to dress for 100 degree weather! Seeing girls walk around in short shorts with maybe a lightweight jacket isn’t ok. Yes, we’re all excited about spring maybe making its way to Central New York…but remember, snow can fall at any moment here.
Dressing like it’s summer when it’s actually eternally winter is not good for the immune system. Even if you have the best immune system ever…you’re going to get sick. You’re going to start sneezing and aching and coughing and wanting to die. Peers will run away from you, not wanting to get sick again. Teachers will shyly collect your schoolwork, holding their breath as they quickly snatch it from your hands and move on to the healthy student sitting next to you. Your soup and tissue boxes will laugh at you for not just having dressed more appropriately for the not-really-warm-but-mildly-
Don’t be that person! Don’t be the girl walking around like Miss Thing wearing almost nothing on a sunny day which turns into a snow fest. You won’t look so cool shaking in your class and making your teeth chatter so loudly no one can hear the lecture. We don’t live in Arizona! Sometimes it seems people forget that and opt to move on to spring and summer fashions. It might officially be spring on the calendar, but Syracuse is always late on the memo.
Though we’re all ready for spring and sitting on the Quad sunbathing, patience is a virtue. And one Syracusians most definitely need. If you just can’t wait to wear the new tank top you bought for summer, pair it up with a nice cardigan or cute coat. Got a new lace dress you’re dying to wear? Match some high boots and a sweater and you’re good to go! Sure I know you’re tired of covering up, but there’s only a month of school left. Why suffer through these weeks with a terrible cold?
I’m sure you all remember the days your mom dressed you—or at the very least forced you to wear a coat before leaving the house. If for nothing else, think of what your poor mother back home would think if she saw you going out in a skimpy outfit to be hit by gusts of wind and the occasional flurries. You are a responsible adult. You need to take care of yourself, from eating right to doing schoolwork to dressing properly. It’s not a difficult concept. You chose Syracuse, you chose cold winter weather for the majority of the two semesters. Love your school, love yourself and love your warm clothes. When you can embrace them, the world will embrace you too (or at least your immune system will).
