Can You Get Tan From Food?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

Tanning is not just a hobby for girls, it is an obsession.  American culture has put an emphasis on tanned and fit bodies.  It’s hard to believe that one day pale and pudgy women were sought after.  (Then again they were using Morse Code back then so what do they know?)  Maybe your 9-5 job keeps you out of the sun or you actually believe in a thing called “skin cancer” so you’d like to find a better way.  I don’t know much about self tanners, but there is another natural way to make your skin “glow”.  It is none other than: fruits and vegetables.  Who knew eating healthy had other benefits?

The Proof

I’ll save you the details of the survey proving “golden” skin looks better, this we know.  A second survey went into more detail finding out if total servings of vegetables and fruit participants are affected that healthy glow.  Result?  More produce and fruit in your diet translates into a more yellow skin tone thus producing a natural glow.

What to Eat

Red, yellow, and orange fruits plus leafy green vegetables.  These foods contain carotenoids like beta-carotene.  These excess carotenoids in return act as a skin pigment making your skin more yellow.  It only takes 3 or 4 servings a day to show some of the effects.  A few examples of foods high in carotenoids are: sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, broccoli, mangoes, pink grapefruits and tomatoes.

Behind the Scenes

We forget to realize how many decisions are being made subconsciously by our mind.  Tanned skin directly shows that you’re well-nourished and healthy. A healthy woman means healthy babies thus subconsciously attracting men.  I’ve also yet to hear a man say he likes pale women.

Consider this article a little more inspiration to eat healthy.  The carotenoids in those fruits and vegetables also help protect you from free radicals (cancer).  So when you are in the sun, your healthy eating will help protect you.  Who knew you could get tan and fit at the same time?
