Yeardley Love’s Family Releases a Statement

It has been almost a year since the May 3, 2010 passing of University of Virginia lacrosse player, Yeardley Love, the 22-year-old who was beaten to death at the hands of her on-and-off boyfriend, and fellow UVA lacrosse player, George Hughley.

Hughley had a preliminary hearing today in court as he faced charges of first degree murder, felony murder, robbery of a residence, burglary, entering a house with an intent to commit a felony and grand larceny.

Immediately following the murder Hughley waived his Miranda rights and explained to police that he had gone to Love’s apartment that evening, kicked in the locked door to her bedroom, and shook her — causing her head to repeatedly hit the wall. Hughley’s lawyer later explained the death had been an accident.

Today’s hearing will determine whether or not there is enough evidence for prosecutors to proceed with the charges against Hughley.

In recognition of Hughley’s court date, the Love family released a statement about their daughter.

“It is truly devastating to wake up each day and realize she is no longer here. Yeardley’s contagious smile, kind spirit and gentle touch have left this world but we know heaven now has an angel like no other. We have faith in the justice system and trust that the truth will prevail,” the statement said.

Hughley was reportedly held without bail in a Charlottesville regional jail awaiting this courtdate.
