Gym Chronicles: Finding the Right Gym This Summer

We have 4 weeks until we’re free from schoolwork! While I’m sure all of us are incredibly excited, there are some amenities we may miss. The breakfast sausage won’t already be ready when you decide you want breakfast, all your friends wont be a few steps away, and you wont have free access to a gym. There are many different varieties of gyms out there to choose from, so here are a few helpful hints to guide your decision process.

Which one are you?

I only like to do cardio.” Lucky for you, the summer time means clear roads, sunshine, and fair weather. You probably don’t need to spend the money on a gym fee if you can run, walk, swim, or bike outside. Pocket that cash you would have spent on a gym fee and use it for the cute espadrilles you’ve been eying.

I like being social in the gym.” If you like to chat while you workout or have a spotter while you bench look for a big-name gym. These gyms are usually filled with people ready to strike up conversation. Especially look for a gym that has a lot of classes and a young crowd. The classes are probably full of people just like you (except for the multi-layered wearing, sweat addicted women front and center) who are eager to make new friends at the gym. (Example: Gold’s Gym)

I hate being bothered by ANYONE at the gym.” So maybe you hate it when someone approaches you at the gym. That’s cool, look for a quiet non-chain gym. If you’re in a place where you have to stand around and wait for machines you’re more likely to be approached by someone. If less people know about it, then there will probably be fewer members. Find a gym where you can minimize wait time and maximize sweat time. (Example: Boutique gym near you)

I don’t want to spend a lot on a gym membership.” Gyms are adding more amenities all the time, which is increasing the cost of being a member. If you’re all about the workout and not about the luxuries, look for a gym that only has the essentials. Another way to spend less is to ask for a student discount. It may not be advertised, but many gyms will give a special rate to students. (Example: Planet Fitness)

I want my gym to be luxurious.” For you, burning calories is only half the battle for good health; without steam rooms, massages, or personal trainers you’re not at your best. If this is your fancy, look for a gym that has its own spa, personal trainers, and smoothie bar. (Example: Sports Club LA)

I’m looking for my husband at the gym.” Why not? Many men who belong to gyms are looking for a partner too! Look for a gym in a business district; most of the members will probably be employees of the different companies around and looking to settle down. Not to mention, if they’re working for a company in a business district, chances are they have disposable income (but that’s not the important part!) Caution: make sure you check to see if he’s wearing a ring or not, you don’t want to be embarrassed or a home-wrecker. And if you don’t find your husband, maybe you’ll find a summer fling or at least get flat abs. (Example: Equinox)

The most important thing to remember is to try out a gym before you buy the full membership. You may think you know what you want, but you could surprise yourself. Many gyms offer weekly trials or even monthly trials. Always ask about the different promotions that are going on; don’t get sucked into paying the full fee when the person on the elliptical next you paid half the fee and got coupons for a free massage and smoothie! Good luck!
