Spring is in the air and on these warm and sunny days nothing is better than an ice cold refreshing drink in your hand as you soak up the sun. Some may envision having a frozen margarita in hand as they work on their tan or while they read a book but some of us have classes we just can’t miss and some of us are not of the legal drinking age. However, here are some local hot spots that offer yummy non-alcoholic drinks that are perfect for these spring time at U days!

It seems as the cold weather is leaving us and the warm weather is coming in everyone on campus is catching a cold. It’s probably from the days when we decide to wear flip flops even though it’s only a mere 50 degrees outside. But one way to boost your immune system is to drink a “Green Power” smoothie from The Juicery in Portsmouth. The “Green Power” smoothie is made of “bananas blended with a sweet combination of apple, peach, and pineapple juice as well as chlorella and spirulina.” This smoothie will have you feeling better in no time. The Juicery also offers a variety of other all natural smoothies, organic juices, and has an organic vegetarian food menu. It is located in down town Portsmouth at 51 Hanover Street. Check it out….you will not be disappointed!

Who doesn’t love ice cream? It’s an amazing and delicious treat that gets even better when you combine it to make yummy ice cream drinks. The UNH Dairy Bar which is located in the train station on campus offers some awesome ice cream drink concoctions. For those ice cream lovers, go back to your youth and try one of the Dairy Bar’s “Brown Cow Floats.” It is essentially a root beer float that will not disappoint. For those who may be lactose intolerant, try a “Tropical Sorbet Freeze” they come in your choice of either lemon or raspberry, perfect for a hot spring, almost summer day.

Another great spot to enjoy a refreshing drink is Breaking New Grounds, located in the heart of down town Durham. Grab a table with some friends outside the shop and enjoy the sunshine with an iced soy chai or a “Larry” which is a 1/2 lemonade and 1/2 ice tea (your choice on flavor: black tea, green tea, mango tea, or red racer tea) It is a great way to spend an afternoon with friends, don’t forget your sunglasses!

For those of you who are 21…I didn’t forget about you, it is always great to unwind in the sunshine with a nice alcoholic beverage in hand. Who doesn’t love a yummy drink that leaves you feeling good on a beautiful day? Here are some local hot spots that you can grab a nice cold drink.

The best place to enjoy some ice cold beers on a hot, sunny afternoon is Ballard’s Bar. Grab your friends, find a table outside on the patio, and enjoy some chilled corona buckets. You can also grab a bite to eat while you hang out. Rumor has it, their chicken fingers are delicious!

When the sun goes down, head to the knot to quench your thirst with one of their famous rum buckets. These sweet concoctions will leave you feeling great. The best part about them is the surprise at the bottom of the cup….rum absorbed gummy bears! Be careful when drinking one, they’re so good that they’ll leaving you wanting more.

Who doesn’t love a good old fashion margarita? The best place to grab an authentic margarita is Poco’s Bow Street Cantina in down town Portsmouth. They offer 14 different margaritas that will leave your tastes buds wanting more. My personal choice is the Pomegranate Margarita. Poco’s also offers an amazing Sangria. It is one drink that you cannot go wrong choosing. It is a combination of “California Red Wine, brandy, Grand Marnier, fruit juices, and a splash of Sierra Mist!” It is truly mhmm-mhmm good! While you are there you can also try some authentic Mexicana food! My favorites are the Taco Salad and the coconut battered chicken!

So there you have it! Some delightfully delicious drinks that you can find on and off campus this spring! Remember to enjoy these drinks with your friends and to have lots of fun too! Drink Responsibly!
