Congratulations, you’re going abroad!  You’ve decided your location, had countless meetings with advisors, and booked your flight.  You’re also one thousand dollars poorer, but full of excitement for future adventures.  You find yourself daydreaming in class about the exotic places you’ll go, the people you’ll meet, and the things you’ll do.  And then, without warning, the panic sets in.  You are going to be away from the Heights for a semester or even a year.  That’s a year without Hillside burgers, football and hockey games, and Mod parties.  Deciding to go abroad is a difficult decision to make.  It’s a tradeoff – while you lose a semester at BC, you gain an unforgettable and unique abroad experience.

Before you eagles fly the coop, there are 5 things you should do:

1.     Go Shopping!
Yes!  You will likely be spending a lot of money on souvenirs and clothing while abroad, but there are some things you should get before you go.  Buy necessities, like your favorite shampoo and conditioner, in the US where they’re easier and cheaper to find.  Come equipped with a wardrobe suitable for your location and its climate.  Your wardrobe will be completely different depending on if you’re studying abroad in Russia rather than Australia.

2.     Do your Research
Read up on the culture of your country and familiarize yourself with local customs and laws.  Spending time learning about the culture before you go will make your adjustment easier.  The State Department website has useful safety tips and other information about the countries you may visit.

3.     Make a plan
A semester may seem like a long time, but, as many have noticed, our time at BC is shorter than we think.  Time will go by just as fast, if not faster, during your time abroad.  To make the most of your trip, plan out what you want to do while you’re there.  Make a list of museums, restaurants, and other countries you want to visit.  Planning ahead of time ensures that you don’t leave Paris without having tasted Angelina’s world famous hot chocolate or without visiting the Colosseum in Rome.

4.      Make the most of your time at BC!
Enjoy all the wonderful things BC and Boston have to offer.  Go to a Red Sox game, have a picnic in the Common (since there’s no Dustbowl), or spend the weekend in the city.  Take advantage of the activities going on at BC.  Cheer obnoxiously at Mile 21 on Marathon Monday!

5.     Take a chance!
During the weeks before your departure, take a chance and do something you wouldn’t normally do.  Don’t become removed just because you’re going abroad.  Instead, try to be more outgoing and friendly.  Tell your long-time crush how you feel or enter the singing competition on campus.  Just go for it!
