As part of its plan to double its menswear business this year, Coach opened the company’s second men’s store at Copley Place in Boston this month.Â
Previously located within the original Coach store at Copley, the men’s-only store is now on the upper level of the mall near Barneys New York and Banana Republic Men. The set-up of the store is consistent with that of the original Coach store, but is masculinized with a dark brown color scheme, and features leather goods such as briefcases and wallets, travel bags, apparel and more.Â
The first Coach Men’s store was introduced in May on Bleecker Street in New York City, and Coach is looking to continue expanding.
“We’re almost one year into our first freestanding men’s store in Bleecker Street,” Coach’s North American president Michael Tucci told Women’s Wear Daily. “And the customer response to the more intensified assortment in that store and our shops in North America and Asia have led us to believe that the men’s opportunity is substantial.”
Though the world of high fashion has traditionally been geared towards a female audience, Coach joins a handful of other designers to open all-men’s store separate from their women’s lines. Earlier this year, Hermès opened its first men’s store in Manhattan and fashion houses such as Ralph Lauren, Dolce & Gabbana and Salvatore Ferragamo have established men’s only stores in recent years.
Chief Executive of Ferragamo Michele Norsa said the reason behind separating men’s and women’s merchandise lies in the way womenswear tends to overshadow menswear.
“Men don’t like to enter a men’s and women’s store to find their products at the back of the store,” Norsa explained in an interview the Wall Street Journal. “In our women’s and men’s stores, the men’s space is often penalized. The women’s collections are wider and tend to steal space from men.”
In addition to its stores in NYC and Boston, Coach also has plans to open men’s stores in San Francisco, Washington, Los Angeles and Paramus, NJ.
In the midst of graduation season (it’s never too late to get your guy a gift, we promise!) and as Father’s Day is fast-approaching, Copley Place’s new Coach Men’s store is open just in time — from accessories to apparel, you’re sure to find something for your main man!
