The competition between reading and multi-tasking tablets is heating up once again. Amazon has just announced that their Kindle will now have textbooks available to rent. For up to 360 days, a student can pay to use a textbook digitally on the e-reader, which will disappear after the rented time. Apparently, rental times can even be extended day by day.
Aware that many students value the notes and markings that are often made in these books, Amazon has set up their Whispersynch technology so that you can make those notes and markings digitally and save them, even when the rental time is up on your textbook. And if you later decide to rent the textbook again or even buy it, your notes will be totally available to you. Amazon also has a Kindle reading app that can be downloaded on PCs, Macs, Android phones, iPods, iPads, iPhones, and Blackberrys, so your textbook is available to you wherever you go.
This is obviously useful for both your back and your wallet, as e-textbooks are often a fraction of the cost (and weight!) of real textbooks–and an even lower price when you rent. That 700 page Intro to Psychology textbook that you need for just one class? Just taken care of.
