Surviving the First Few Weeks of School

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

This is the time of the year where all of the smiles disappear from the faces of young adults nationwide. It is time for the dreaded first week of school. But guess what? You have made it! Although school excites a few students, the rest of us were wishing we were still at the beach. With one week of school down and only nine more months left (yes, I am already counting), let us see how you can make the best of it.

Here at the University of South Florida, we take the first few weeks of school very important… Important for free food, making new friends, and getting involved. This is all thanks to the event called “Week of Welcome”. The goal of it is to make new students feel at home and gaining the participation of all students. Week of Welcome takes place every year August 17 – 28 and showcases what the university has to offer.

Just when you think all the fun is over, think again! WOW also offers “8 Weeks of Programs for New Students”. This includes a schedule of events for August 28 – October 15. These events range from clubs, sporting events, Panhellenic recruitment, and many other opportunities to become involved. Clearly, it is not very hard to find something to do or to feel at home at USF. With over 47,000 students, you are bound to meet someone new.

With the Florida weather that we all know, the first week of class was pretty unbearable. One minute you were sweating your butt off, even when you were in the shade. The next minute there is a torrential downpour and you feel like you need to go find one of every animal and build an arc before the whole campus floods. The only solution to the problem is to go out and invest in an umbrella and maybe some rain boots to save your life and most importantly, do not forget to roll up your car windows or else you will have a new portable swimming pool.

The first week of school is always pure madness with people trying to find their classes and parking. Some people are so caught up in that, they do not even think about their appearance. I have seen students walk to class in their pajamas, sweats, and completely not matching. I want to know, what do all of you Her Campus readers take on the whole argument of fashion on college campuses? Do you put comfort before fashion, or is it a necessity to always look good? Reply with an answer if you think that it does not matter what you wear to class or if you think you should always look fashionable.

With all of that said, check out upcoming events on campus. Go explore the new campus recreation gym, go to Bull Market on a Wednesday, or take a walk around campus, but most importantly – get involved and make the most of this year!
