THE HC TEAM WEIGHS IN: Best College Classes We Ever Took

Want to know what’s going through the HC team’s head? Check in here every other week to see what the HC Team has to say about college tips, trends, news, etc.
This week we’re remembering our favorite college classesshare yours with us by leaving a comment below!

The best class I took in college was a Marketing class in the spring of 2007 with a guy named Randy Harrison. He’s kind of like watching Jim Creamer, real intense, insanely entertaining. Well, Randy was in love with Steve Jobs and the iPhone announcement. He said it would change the entire f****** world and that it was one of the greatest things ever to grace the world.
I thought it was simply a phone. Why would I want an iPod and an iPhone? Apple’s stock price was $70 at the time. Now it’s well over $300.
– Jake Duhaime, Publicity, Emerson Alum

I took a Creative Writing: Non-Fiction class during my junior year as an elective and ended up LOVING it! I even made it my minor after finishing the class. It really sparked my interest in writing for an audience (oh hey, Her Campus readers!), and I also learned the value of writing as a way to process personal experiences. It’s always worth it to take random classes during your college career — you never know what you might fall in love with.
– Jenni Whalen, Contributing Writer/Editorial Intern, Bucknell University

The best class I took in college was a core class called PULSE. It was a two semester double credit class that combined Philosophy and Theology along with 10 hours of community service per week. I did mine at a food-source hotline, and learned the equation to check whether callers were eligible for SNAP, or food stamps. Others did theirs at after school programs, hospitals and rehab centers.
The professor was very helpful and obviously loved teaching. We had weekly discussions that would apply what we had learned at our placements to what we were reading in class. We read old philosophy like Aristotle and Machiavelli, newer philosophy like Malcolm X, and discussed issues like “The Working Poor” and whether sexism still exists. It was a class that actually changed the way I thought about things, rather than just gave me facts.

The best class I’ve taken and continue to take at Skidmore is, hands down, Metalsmithing. English is my major focus, but I spend equally as much time in the studio art (my minor) building making jewelry and other amazing things out of metal. Honestly, I love every minute I’m in the metals studio and I can’t believe what I’ve made!
– Kelsey Thorn, Design and Media Team Associate, Skidmore College

The best class I’ve taken so far in college was called Pariscapes. The class was all about Paris, a city I’m absolutely in love with. We worked our way through Belle Epoque Paris to modern Paris, reading novels by Zola and Hemingway to name a few, studying French art, and watching bizarre French movies. We even got to go to the MOMA in New York to see French impressionist and cubist paintings. The class was also amazing because the professor is an awesome, old, very sarcastic man who loves to slip sexual innuendos into everything. It was somewhat applicable to the real world in the sense that it was writing intensive, but mostly it was just a very enjoyable learning experience.
– Evelyn Kramer, Campus Correspondent, Amherst College

The best class I’ve taken thus far is public speaking. Not only did my professor make the class fun and interesting to hold our attention (it was a 2.5 hour night class), but also every skill and speaking tip I learned from the class is relevant to real world experiences like job interviews and making presentations.
– Meghan Montagna, Campus Correspondent, Rowan University

The best class I have taken so far in college is a Textile and Apparel Management class called Social Appearances in Time and Space. It wasn’t the most interesting class in the world, but it allowed us to express our own personal style, and I really loved the instructor! I took another one of her classes the very next semester.
– Allie Duncan, Contributing Writer, University of Missouri

The most enjoyable class I’ve taken at UT is CMS 315- John Daly’s Interpersonal Communication Theory. The lectures are always fun and entertaining, there was virtually no work and whatever readings we had to do were fun because of the content… and who doesn’t like to talk about relationships?
– Bernice Chuang, Campus Correspondent, UT Austin

The best class I’ve taken so far was Organization Psych because we learned valuable lessons that are applicable in the real world and most importantly because the professor was awesome! It was obvious she enjoyed teaching us and that made me want to learn more. We learned all about Disney World as an organization and got to do group projects on a business of our choice; my group picked Starbucks. Unlike some of my other lectures, I attended this class every week because it was so interesting.
– Erica Avesian, Contributing Writer, University of Michigan

My favorite class so far was this class called Multireligious America. Essentially, we discussed popular religions and their relationship with American culture. I think what really made the class was our professor, Stephen Prothero; he was well versed in the topic (he was on The Colbert Report and wrote a book on religion) and very funny. He gave us awesome memoirs to read throughout the semester. These books were stuff that students WANTED to read. My class was also very cultural so it promoted great discussion!

The best class I’ve taken so far in college would probably be snowboarding. I loved it because it was unexpected as a P.E. class and not many colleges offer it. Learning to snowboard for a grade was awesome and it got me out of my comfort zone. It was so much fun and I don’t think I ever would’ve learned if I hadn’t taken it through school!
– Laura Maddox, Campus Correspondent, Appalachian State University

My favorite class was Political Psychology. Not only was my teacher super hot, I learned a lot about the psychological mannerisms of some historical tyrants and actually held onto the books once the semester was over.
– Lauren Conrad, Campus Correspondent, University of Kentucky

Relaxation. No joke. They taught us stress relief tactics that help so much in the real world. Problem is that you not only need to remember to practice them, but to take a few minutes everyday to do them. You would be surprised just how much you will feel better when you take a few minutes everyday for “you time.”
– Andrea Opalewski, Branch Manager, Western Michigan University

Relationship Psychology. It was interesting because we all are involved in relationships regardless if they are romantic or familial. It taught me the realistic/statistical views on romantic relationships. There will be peaks and valleys.

The best class I’ve taken in college was a classics course on Greek tragedy, CLAS 362. I took it in the summer, so our class size was really small and we had an actual professor, which was automatically a bonus. I have always had a weird interest in classics, but the reason I loved the class so much is because our professor was so great. He got to know all of us really well and met with each of us about our class papers and was always interested in helping students outside of class. I actually am taking an easier classics course this semester with the same professor because he was that great! The best thing you can do in college is take class with great professors — even if it’s not your major, they can still write you recommendations and might know people in your field.
– Meghan DeMaria, Contributing Writer, UNC Chapel Hill

The best class I ever took was World Regions with Professor John Boyer. It is just all around one of the best (if not THE best) classes you can take at Virginia Tech. The class was very useful for the real world because we learned about different world regions, their cultures, and issues going on in the world right now that many college students don’t know much about. Not only is the professor extremely enthusiastic about what he teaches, he’s also extremely knowledgeable about what he teaches. He always weaves humor into his classes, sometimes starting sessions with hilarious skits. I took it with a class of 3,000 (yes, 3,000!) people. We only met once a week in person, and the rest of the class was made up of online podcasts he starred in as his alter ego, The Plaid Avenger (www.plaidavenger.com). He also had us read a textbook that he wrote, and it is the best textbook that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. There are so many great things about Boyer I could say, and I’m sure most of the students at Virginia Tech would agree with me. It’s known as the must-take class before you graduate!
