Cutoff shorts, floral dresses, tank tops and short-sleeve V-necks – I don’t know about you but thanks to frequent summer trips to Forever 21, H&M and Charlotte Russe, my closet is practically overflowing with these summer pieces. Sadly, before I can say “Midterms!” colder weather will begin to settle in and then what will become of my cute summer clothes? Do I let them collect dust in the back of my closet as I stock up on brand new winter clothing? Of course not!
With the help of a few key pieces, there are tons of ways to transition your warm weather wardrobe into stylish outfits that work for fall. For starters, try adding a pair of thick black or navy blue tights underneath your denim cutoff shorts. In search of something edgier? Opt instead for burgundy, mustard, or even cobalt blue tights. As Essence magazine’s September issue suggests, a bold pop of color is the perfect way to breathe life into any ensemble. I would finish this look off with some brown or black vintage booties.
A pair of tights will also come in handy when transitioning your flirty floral dresses. The 2011 fall issue of InStyle lists floral prints as a must-have for this season so don’t hesitate to slip into your spring and summer frocks and skirts. To complete this look, simply reach for a blazer, my favorite piece at the moment.
If you don’t yet have a blazer, I would suggest looking into adding one to your wardrobe since they are extremely versatile and an easy way to elevate any outfit from drab to fab. Plus, they always look sleek and sophisticated and are sure to flatter all body shapes. To make use of your thin V-neck t-shirts, sheer blouses, and strapless tops, shimmy into your favorite skinny jeans and throw on a warm, long sleeved cardigan. For added warmth, drape a stylish scarf over your neck and you’re good to go.
Not sure what shoes to wear with this outfit? According to InStyle’s 2011 fall issue, menswear is all the rage this season so if I’m feeling particularly trendy, I would tie my outfit together with a pair of Oxfords. These classic shoes can help add a slightly masculine edge to plenty of fall ensembles. They come in a variety of styles and colors and can be worn with everything from shorts, to dresses, to leggings.
Now that you have these easy, wardrobe-expanding tips at your disposal, you can make your summer clothes work for you well into fall and even the winter months – and look cute and classroom appropriate while doing it!
