The Top Hair & Makeup Trends For Fall

We all want to go back to college ready to take on new challenges, while also looking fabulous!  This fall you’ll walk to the library for a study session as if you were working the runway and, believe it or not, you may even get excited for your 8 AM class just because you’ll want to show off your awesome looks!  Throughout the upcoming season you can be chic with a sultry smoky eye, daring with fashion-forward sleek ponytails, and sweet with naturally flushed cheekbones. Her Campus is here to fill you in on the latest fall trends in hair and makeup!

Makeup

Metallic Smoky Eyes
What girl doesn’t love to play with her eye shadow every once in a while?  Search for gemstone colors this fall, like amber, sapphire, and deep amethyst.  A loose powder tends to work best, and if you’re looking to splurge a bit for an evening event or party try using Soul Sister by Bare Minerals ($13 www.bareescentuals.com). First dust a light shadow, like white or silver, from your lashes to your brows to brighten your eyes and accentuate their natural color.  The key to a great smoky eye is to add a bit of water to the shadow before application.  This brings out the shimmer in the pigment, and takes away the “glittery” look.  (We don’t want to look like pre-teens who got into their mothers’ makeup stashes, right?) Add a drop of water to your eye shadow applicator and carefully apply a metallic gemstone color from your lashes to crease.  Use only a thin layer of color if you’re going for more daytime-friendly makeup.  Blend your main shadow from your crease to lower-brow area a bit if you want an evening look.  Don’t forget to apply plenty of mascara and liner to give a pristine finish to your metallic smoky eyes!

Candy Shop Eye Shadows
For a more modern look, dare to try brightly colored eye shadows.  It’s always fun to play with color, so go ahead and dig out the obscure shadows you own! Try using colors like Maybelline New York’s Eye Studio Color Explosion in Pink Punch to draw attention to not only your face, but also your entire outfit. Apply only one color to make your shadow truly standout.

Flushed Cheeks and Monochrome Lips
The bohemian look is definitely in this fall and can best be achieved by applying natural colors to your face and keeping your hair carefree!  Maybelline’s Fit Me Blush makes your natural rosy color stand out and should be reasonably applied to your cheekbones to achieve a flushed look. To best utilize this product smile at yourself in the mirror (yes, you will feel goofy) and gently brush your makeup onto the apples of your cheeks. Keep your lips natural by applying a light coat of neutral lip gloss or lip stain, like Covergirl Outlast Lip Stain in Nude Kiss.

Whimsical High Bun
The whimsical high bun can be done in four steps: First tease your hair at the crown to add just a bit of texture and body.  Pull your hair into a high ponytail without using a brush, and if you want to take a serious leap of faith don’t look in the mirror until you’re done with this updo. The right kind of messy hair adds effortless character to your style. Starting at the base of your ponytail, coil your hair into a bun and secure with bobby pins as you wrap. Gently pull and random sections of your do to give your high bun a playful feel.

Sleek Ponytail
We’ve all had our hair in a high or low ponytail at some point, but instead of looking like you just finished cheerleading practice, this fall’s hairstyles are overtly fashion forward.  First slightly dampen your hair at the roots with a wet comb (just using your hands will also work).  With a brush or comb, pull your hair into a high or low ponytail and secure with a hair tie.  This look is simple so it has to be perfected; make sure to spray back all flyaways using your favorite hairspray!

Whimsical Braid
The relaxed braid is another look where it may be best to not glance in the mirror until you’re finished. To start, make sure that all of your hair is behind you.  Then separate it into three sections of all different sizes. Unlike a polished braid, the relaxed look shouldn’t have even pieces. Twist each section as your braid and secure at the bottom when finished.

Whether you’re searching for a modern, classic, or bohemian style you are sure to find what you are looking for this fall.  Don’t be afraid to try out looks that you think are too unusual, because you never know if you’ll end up loving them!
