In “The Freshman Chronicles”, accompany Catherine and Chelsea, both new to the school and city, as they write about their first year at the University of Chicago.

In addition to chatting about the new experiences they encounter, the two girls will discuss issues that pertain to their fellow first-years.

Read on for Catherine and Chelsea’s bios!

Catherine Alvarez-McCurdy, a member of the Class of 2015, is from San Antonio, TX where she graduated from a magnet high school that concentrated on global studies. At University of Chicago, she is looking forward to joining UBallet, playing intramural sports, and exploring the city. Above all, she is looking forward to the crisp weather and the engaging classes.

Chelsea Bates is a freelance dim sum eater and candy aficionado. When she’s not gorging her literary appetite, she’s fighting the incessant urge to doodle caricatures of prominent political figureheads and cute animals. Call her a writer, call her a feminist, call her afflicted by wanderlust, but don’t call her at midnight…she’s probably studying (sleeping/watching old movies).

Sophomorically lame humor aside, Chelsea was born and intermittently raised in Carmel, CA. The spawn of an artist and a teacher, she was lucky enough to travel the world at a very young age. Things boiled down as high school life took over, but she’s excited to jump into the life of a college freshman. Follow her on her journey as she indulges in all the wonderful things UChicago has to offer!
