Revamp Your Space, Before it’s Too Late!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCSU chapter.

I lived in a suite with several guys and some of their rooms looked a tornado came through. There were clothes everywhere, food left there for days, and there were also papers and homework from weeks ago all over the floor.  Also, my room was not very comfortable for other people visiting.  I pretty much only brought the essentials to school.  I brought everything I would need for classes, some clothes, some books for personal reading and my soccer ball.

However, some of these guys in my suite brought everything – and I mean everything. They brought their televisions, guitars, bikes and skateboards.  They brought their sofas and chairs.  Their rooms were packed with so many things. Therefore, their rooms were really cramped and there wasn’t any extra space.  My side of the room was very clean and everything was organized.  But there are different ideas of what a comfortable room is to each person. However, these ideas could make your living experience a little bit easier.

1.  Don’t bring everything you own to your dorm room or apartment. You’re only going to be there for the school year and you’re going to have a lot of stuff to pack and take with you back home.  So only bring what you think you’ll need.

2.  Consider leaving your video games at home.  You don’t want the added distractions of video games and other things to distract from your schoolwork and your friends.

3.  Bring some personal stuff because it gives you comfort to have your favorite things beside you.  I brought some cookbooks and some books for light reading as well as my soccer ball and basketball. You don’t always want to share things or buy new things either.

4.  Bring lots of lighting!  In my room, there was this white fluorescent lighting and I did not like it at all.  It was right at the top of my desk so there would always be a light in my eyes and it would bother me. The lamp I brought is adjustable so the lamp can be stretched out so that the light isn’t in my eyes.

5.  Bring large containers from home to put your stuff into.  My roommate brought these large containers where he would stash snacks and lots of other stuff.  Having your stuff in containers helps to keep organized.  Our room was always clean.

6.  Clean your room.  Sweep and vacuum the floor.  Clean the bathroom. It helps your focus to have a clean room. Have you ever used cleaning your messy room as an excuse to not do your homework? Yeah, nice try.

7.  Bring a mat or a rug. Otherwise, bring sandals or slippers because these tiled floors are cold especially in the morning.

8.  You could buy some fake flowers or plants and bring them back to your dorm room. They never have to be watered, they never die, and you don’t have to replace them!  Put the flowers in a vase or decorate your bed or walls with them!
