Though the end of racetrack season may bring with it the end of summer fun and excitement, Saratoga Springs still has much to offer in the fall and winter months. As tourists pour out and students return, it’s the perfect time of year to take advantage of all that Skidmore’s surrounding community has to offer.
When the leaves begin to change and Starbucks reinstates its Pumpkin Spice Latte, it is clear that fall has begun. Although you can easily get your seasonal fixings with a quick trip to town or to Case on Fridays to visit the Saratoga Apple produce stand, there isn’t anything more festive than spending an afternoon apple-picking and eating cider doughnuts. Saratoga Apple is a family-owned orchard and farm stand that’s open seven days a week and only a short car ride away from campus. In September and October you can Pick-Your-Own apples, with a discount on a weekday. Fall is in full swing on the weekends, with the farm featuring hayrides and live music.

The Scribner Village party circuit may already be getting old, and a night spent off campus can be refreshing and fun. Going out to the movies is a perfect activity for a weekend night and although the bus stops right at the Wilton Mall where you could catch a movie, why not head on over to the Malta Drive-In movie before the season ends? Located just 15 minutes from campus, the drive-in plays current movies and offers a wide range of movie snacks. It’s a great idea for a date or a night spent with friends. If you’re more in the mood for some competitive fun, another way to spend a night off of campus is bowling. Saratoga Strike Zone offers “$1.99 Extravaganza” on Thursdays and Galactic Bowling from 11:30-2 AM on Friday and Saturday nights.

As schoolwork begins to pile up, sometimes a quiet afternoon that does not involve the library is necessary. The Yaddo Gardens is the perfect place to go to unwind. Yaddo is an artists’ community that provides professional artists with a place to live and work without interruption. Located within the 400-acre estate are the Yaddo Gardens. Featuring a rose garden and rock garden, the gardens consist of a variety of plants that bloom throughout the season. The Gardens are open to the public from 8 AM to dusk everyday, with guided tours offered. Beginning September 23rd and running through October 30 is the special seasonal tour, Ghosts in the Yaddo Gardens.Â
