Crisp mornings with Starbucks™ in hand, sunny days studying on the Quad, the colorful skyline of the Shenandoah Valley, and, most importantly, purple-and-gold filled football games. Yes, that’s right, collegiettes™, it’s that time of year again — Fall in Harrisonburg! A lot of you might be thinking you don’t technically live in Harrisonburg, rather JMU, but it’s basically it’s own little town! Newsflash ladies: you are, or have been, a resident of the Harrisonburg community, so embrace it!
As a first-year here at JMU, it’s hard to know about all of the amazing things Harrisonburg had to offer. Even as a sophomore, junior, or senior, it is important to take advantage of this place we call home for four years of our lives. I have to say, I personally crave the fall in Harrisonburg! It is the most beautiful time of the year here to me. The fresh air, outdoor activities, and spirit on campus is contagious! Of course we are all busy with classes at the start of the new school year, but sometimes we need to take a breather — relax a bit. Have a lazy Saturday or get out and explore the town. These are the things you will remember about your college experience! Stuck on what exactly to do? Let me help you with that…
Do Downtown
Downtown is a “never-fail” plan. Although it may be small, downtown Harrisonburg has so much to offer for all types of Collegiettes™! For all you diners out there — eat up! The Artful Dodger and the Earth and Tea Cafe are the perfect funky little coffee and tea shops for a fun coffee date on a fall afternoon. Dave’s Taverna, Blue Nile Ethiopian Cuisine, Beyond, The Little Grill Collective, and Indian American Café will satisfy those of you with ethnic taste buds. Just craving some good ‘ol grub? Jack Brown’s Burger Joint, The Smokin’ Pig, Billy Jack’s Wing and Draft Shack, Jess’ Lunch and Union Station Restaurant and Bar are your go-to places. Lastly, top off those amazing meals with the famous Kline’s Dairy Bar, Cocolicious Cupacakes, or BitterSweet Bakery!
Get Outdoors
Look around — we live in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, complete with gorgeous bright sunrises and pink sunsets over the silhouettes of the mountains. Fall is the perfect time for a nice hike, camping trip, or weekend getaway! Grab some friends and head to Shenandoah National Park for some great camping and hiking sites. Or grab your boy for a day date to Skyline Drive, or your roommates for a wine day at the vineyards. No matter what you do outside, the surroundings are breathtaking during this time of year!
Stay Local
Don’t have a car? Don’t fret! JMU has so many activities to get involved in or go to on campus throughout fall. Go to the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum and Botanical Gardens to relax, catch up on reading, ride your bike, or have a picnic. And who can forget about football games? Everybody here bleeds purple and gold so get in the spirit and go cheer on your fellow duuuuukes!
It’s Fall in the ‘Burg — no matter what you do, experience it to its fullest. There are endless opportunities to get involved and stay active during this beautiful time of year — so get out and enjoy it!
