The first episode of ABC’s Pan Am draws viewers in with stories of spies, affairs and sibling rivalry. The story line puts viewers near the beginning of the adventure that is being a Pan Am stewardess in 1963. Using flashbacks, the show fills in what’s missing, while propelling the story line forward through dramatic encounters with ex-lovers and new allies. Set in the Cold War, during a time when women symbolized beauty and elegance, Pan Am has the potential for episodes full of sex and danger.

Besides the compelling story, Pan Am focuses on beautiful people going to beautiful places during an era where travel was truly glamorous. The only excitement in traveling in 2011 is the occasional security hold-up. In 1963, travel was a status symbol, which the show proves with the high profile flyers it highlights. The costumes for the show are decade appropriate and add to the flashy allure of the characters. Beyond the glamour, there is the underlying history of women gaining independence and taking control of their lives, which leaves viewers cheering on the characters. All in all, Pan Am has potential to provide viewers with season upon season of enthralling story lines and holds an appeal akin to AMC’s award-winning Mad Men.
