With school just starting again and everyone having busy schedules, Emerson students have been running around like crazy and we have been clogging the elevators at all hours of the day. No need to fear though, with just a few simple steps you can learn some easy elevator tips and etiquette which will help with packed elevators, elevator weight time, and getting to class on time.

  1. When entering an elevator always remember that stairs are, for the most part, always available at Emerson. So especially if there is a crowd, do not push a floor that is above or below a floor that is currently pressed, instead just take the stairs. This means do not press consecutive floors. This will one make you feel like you have done some physical activity and two make the elevator rides quicker and more efficient.
  2. Personal Space. Personal space is a big issue. We all allow a certain amount of personal space around ourselves and we know when getting into an elevator it may be intruded. If there is a long line of students waiting to get into the elevator, squish together, its ok if personal space is violated for a few floors. However, once people begin exiting the elevator begin moving out of the way of the people’s space to which you have broken into.
  3. A quick tip for new Emerson freshmen is that the Walker building has hidden elevators. If you do not know about this already and are sick of standing in the line at the front of the Walker building walk down the Boylston Place Alley (also known as Diagon Alley), and on the left you will find a second entrance to Walker with two huge elevators.

  4. When living in PROW people who live on the third floor should take the stairs when possible. The stairs are available from 9 am to 6 pm. This will just clear up one floor that does not need to be stopped at. This is also true for the LB. But since there are more elevators in the LB this is not as big of a problem. Since Colonial and Paramount are set up differently this rule does not apply to those dorms.
  5. When an elevator arrives for you wait for all the other people to get off the elevator before you yourself enter and step out of the exiting people’s way. It is tough to get out of an elevator, room, T-car, etc. when someone else is trying to get in before you can get off.
  6. Outside of the elevators there are lights that will light up whether it is going up or down. Before you enter an elevator or ask the other people in the elevator look at which light is lit up. If the top light is lit up and you want to go down, do not get in. If the bottom light it lit up and you want to go up do not get in. The elevator will also make a “ding” sound when the one you want arrives for you based on the button you have pushed.
  7. Do not leave trash, spilled food, footprints on the walls, unscrew the lights, etc. in the elevators. Emerson College and its cleaning staff do not appreciate this. It costs money to replace things and it’s not hard to take your trash with you. If something in an elevator car is spilled then let an RA or cleaning staff member know. That way they have less work for themselves at the end of the day trying to clean up messes that have been sitting there all day.
