It’s that time of year for the most comfortable sweaters and the warmest foods. Check out a snapshot of what fall-tivities Burlington has to offer!

Apple and pumpkin picking
Its a must-do for the fall season. Prime apple season begins and its right next door to Burlington! If you and your friends have a free day, take a trip over to Shelburne Orchards in Shelburne, VT and fill a bag to bring back.
Not only can you pick your own apples, but they also have homemade cider, pumpkin pickicking, pies, and so many other goodies to really give you a feel of Vermont’s local taste. Even crazier, in October, Shelburne Orchards hosts a gigantic pumpkin race in Lake Champlain along with other a bunch of other events to check out.

Hike, hike, hike!
Fall is my all-time favorite season for hiking. The temperature isn’t too cold or too hot during the trek up and the views are fantastic! A couple popular hikes to try out are Mount Mansfield or Camels Hump, both challenging yet extremely satisfying hikes.

Sweaters, wool socks and boots, oh my!
Lets be real…who doesn’t love warm, comfy sweaters doubled up with a pair of wool socks? Check out the many store options downtown, like Sweet Lady Janes, Stella’s, Ecco, Whim, Urban Outfitters and etc, for the biggest selection possible. As for boots, I’ve had my eye on a few at the Shoe Shop and Stella’s on Church Street that I would definitely recommend checking out.

Â
Check out the local vendors
City Market hosts its annual Harvest Celebration, on October 2nd where local vendors come out and connect with the community by offering samples for customers to try. Check it out to support your local community!
Go see a local band.
A few coffee shops in Downtown Burlington have live performances that are perfect to sip a cup of coffee to and tap your feet. One I recently tested out was Radiobean, right off of Pearl Street by Rite Aid, that has local bands play every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The cafe has an extremely folky-indie-artistic with excellent deserts and warm drinks. If your 21, take advantage of their massive collection of wines that are showcased right behind the bar.
Another good choice is Muddy Waters, an extremely homey cafe with a woodsy design. They offer local bands variously throughout the week, and even performances like live jazz sessions.
Oh, and both have AMAZING cider and chai teas, so drink up!

Try out all the fall flavors!
If you haven’t tried a cider donut (offered in Bailey-Howe Library’s Cyber Cafe and other various places around Burlington) paired up with a hot apple cider, you’re definitely missing out. Even more to brag about are the pumpkin chocolate chip muffins in the MarchĂ©’s desert case. Never switched from Colombian Supremo coffee to Pumpkin Spice coffee? Well today, my friends, is the day to do so. City Market has soups made by local business vendors made with real apples and carrots (sounds strange, but oh no…it’s delicious).
I may be getting a little over excited, but I mean come on. I can feel my mouth watering just from talking about it!
Â
Take advantage of the scenery
The cheapest and easiest way to enjoy the fall is to just get outside. Take a walk downtown, go for a walk in the woods, or take a blanket outside with a mug full of coffee. The options are endless!
Â
Mark October 22nd off on your calender
Don’t make plans, Burlington is celebrating its fall culture with the Vermont International Film Festival, one of the world’s oldest environment and human rights film festival. Its also the day to finally put to use of that indian costume you bought for that one Cowboys vs Indians theme party. The Halloween Parade/Celebration takes place downtown from 10:30am-noon. Â
