Okay, it’s October, and that means that it is time to put away the shorts and flip-flops and bring out the jeans and boots. This year though it seems like we have to check the weather forecast every day just to see if it will be 60 or 80 degrees outside. Because of this, our closets and drawers are completely stuffed with clothes for two seasons. I don’t know about everyone else, but going through my clothes for an extra 10 minutes each day wastes time I really don’t have.
So, I have come up with a list of five pieces of clothing/accessories that transition well from summer to fall. That way, you can get rid of some of that clutter in your room!
- Hoodies
Everyone on campus has a hoodie. If you don’t, buy one now! It is the perfect article of clothing to wear year-round. Whether you wear it in the summer with your running shorts or in the fall and winter with your sweatpants, it is the perfect, “get up and go to class in 15 minutes,” solution. Go to the Ambrose bookstore to buy one and show your school spirit. Buy a zip-up hoodie from any store. You don’t have to spend a lot!
2. Scarves
Okay, I am a bit biased when it comes to scarves. If you look in my closet, you will find at least seven, but it is for a good reason! I had always liked scarves but saved them for the colder seasons. Then, I studied abroad in London and realized that you can really wear scarves all year round. Wear a lightweight scarf in the warmer months. You might think that it will be too warm, but you would be surprised. Pair it with a short-sleeved V-neck T-shirt or a tank top, and you will be comfortable. Then, in the colder months you can still wear the lightweight scarves or switch to heavier ones. You can pair these with your cardigans, a dress, or your jacket. Pick fun patterns. That way you can easily wear the same scarf with several different T-shirts.
3. TOMS
If you are looking for a comfortable shoe to wear during all seasons, TOMS are the way to go. I waited until this summer to buy a pair for myself because I didn’t necessarily want to get involved in a fad. And here I am today, wearing my bright, sparkly TOMS and at the same time trying to justify why I need the olive green colored ones too. Not only are TOMS cute and easy to pair with several outfits, but they are also really comfortable. From corduroy, to glitter, to plaid, to their signature canvas shoes, TOMS has a great variety, and the price is right. At $53.95—or even cheaper—you get a great pair of shoes that lasts, and for every pair you buy, a child in need gets a pair. That way, you can shop and do a good deed all in one day!
4. Cardigans
Fact: You can always use a cardigan. Whether it is summer and you bring one into a cold restaurant or movie theater, or it is the beginning of fall when you don’t quite need a jacket yet, cardigans are always in season. You don’t need to pay a fortune, and you can combine your cardigan with different necklaces and scarves to create multiple outfits. Buy a few neutral colored ones that will match easily with any jeans or accessories, but also have one or two brightly colored cardigans. My favorite outfit is a pair of skinny jeans and a V-neck T-shirt with a scarf and cardigan—so comfortable.
5. Leggings
Maybe this is an obvious choice for comfy pants, but if it works, don’t mess with it. Leggings are amazing because they are basically stylish sweatpants. They are so comfortable, and you can pair leggings with just about anything from a long, cute shirt with a belt, to a dress, and they will work. I love leggings because they are lightweight enough to wear in the summer months but also work well in the cooler months because the material clings to you, making sure you stay warm unlike with denim, which turns cold faster. You could even get the best of both worlds and buy jeggings. Leggings also work great with fall boots. I am obsessed with riding boots, and they are much easier to wear with leggings than jeans. Just like with the cardigan, have a few neutral colored leggings, but then add some color to that wardrobe!
