Once known for being the most controversial new show of the fall season, The Playboy Club will now be known as the first show of this season to get the axe after only three episodes.  Entertainment Weekly reported that from now until October 31st the 10 PM time slot will be filled with reruns of Prime Suspect, after which, Deadline.com reports Rock Center with Brian Williams, will take over.
Why the early shut down? The Playboy Club had a rocky beginning, with low ratings that got progressively worse after each of the three episodes. The final episode had only 3.4 million viewers, compared to shows like The New Girl which pulled in 8.6 million viewers on Tuesday. The blog Shadow and Act reportedly spoke to an NBC insider who shed light on the shows cancellation, stating that “The writing was cliche…and not enough research was done on the time period to give it that level of authenticity it needed.”
The source did not mention the protests of the Parents Television Council or the many women’s rights activists, including Gloria Steinem who called for a boycott of the show, having once gone undercover to experience the not so glamorous playboy club waitress lifestyle first hand. Morality in Media stated in a press release that NBC has “closed the club” due to its “dismal ratings and viewer outrage,” and called the cancelled show a “series that glorified the sexual exploitation of women.”
