“Ironically wearing a softball jersey of a team you never played for.”

“Clown make-up”

“A super villain who uses her powers against me.”

“Someone who has pretty good eyesight but wears glasses regardless.”

“Stage-five clingers.”

“MATH.”

As in typical Emerson fashion, these guys had no problem pointing out the eccentricities of Emerson girls that they find unattractive.  But all kidding aside, how can you win the heart of an Emerson boy when they seem to be far and few between?  Here’s some advice straight from the straight guys.

Be Open Minded.  “Girls tend to have a soul mate sculpted, cast and molded,” says David Meltzer, a freshman Screen Writing major.  “Guys are more impulsive.  We just think,  ‘You look nice,’ and act on that when we see a girl we like.”

Be open to dating a variety of different guys.  “I don’t have a specific type,” says Colin Batty, a second semester junior Sound Design major. “You never know who you’ll find yourself liking tomorrow.”

So don’t be afraid if you find yourself falling for the writer, or the video geek, or, even the athlete.

Date other Majors One of the best things about going to Emerson is the unique majors.  From screen writing, to publishing, to set design, Emerson offers a variety of creative programs.  But this also means that a lot of students have the same interests, and that can be frustrating when it comes to dating.

“Everyone here is so similar to begin with,” says David. “So while I may have awesome initial impressions of a girl in my major, it can become a bit repetitive,”

Dating outside of your major gives you the opportunity to learn something completely outside of your comfort zone.  You’ll constantly have new things to talk about and will be exposed to tons of different people.

“I love the idea of having a break [from my major],” says Colin. “…And having a girlfriend I can talk to about something that’s not surrounding me everyday.”

To be or not to be…hipster? There’s no denying the hipster look is prominent at Emerson.  But being overly trendy or eccentric can be off putting to guys.

“I understand the idea of wearing vintage clothing,” says Colin, “but not when it’s everyday.”

Keep your look “guy friendly” by investing in a few statement pieces, such as an awesome velvet jacket or a beaded mini skirt. Make sure they match your personality and don’t come off as trying to hard.

“You should wear your clothes the way you want other people to see you,” says David,  “Be true to your personality and that will come through no matter what you’re wearing.”

Be Spontaneous Between classes and extracurriculars it can be easy to get bogged down by work.  But you’re never going to meet any guys if you’re cooped up in your room working all of the time.

“Spontaneity is sexy,” says David.  Take up that guy down the hall on his offer for lunch.  Text the guy you met at that party.  Go for that walk down Boylston even though you barely have time to sleep.  Guys like girls who are fun to be around and can forget about their schoolwork…at least for a little while.

So now that you know what Emerson guys are looking for, make a move!  Don’t let other girls (or guys!) get them first. “If you want to go out with a guy, you need to ask him out,” said Colin.  “Let go of the stereotype that the guy has to ask out the girl.  [Girls] out number straight guys here by a lot.”  Straight guys do exist at Emerson, it’s just up to you to find them.
