What’s it like being on the golf team at NU? How do you juggle golf with school and a social life?
The golf team at NU is a big commitment. We have practices six days a week and early morning workouts at 6:30 am twice a week. Our 36 hole tournament days can last up to 12 hours of straight golfing, so it’s definitely a balancing act between golf, school, and seeing friends. Being a student-athlete, time management and self-control are important skills to have. It’s tough sometimes knowing you’re missing out on some social events, but you have to have the self-control to stay in and get what you need taken care of.  I’ve always struggled with this, but I think I now have a goal for the future of being a professional golfer, so I understand what needs to be done in order to get there. That being said, being a Northwestern golfer and student-athlete has been one of the most rewarding experiences.

How did you first get involved with golf?
My parents are members at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, and my mom and dad played a bit. My dad would take me out at age 4 with a putter, tee it up for me in the middle of the fairway, and I would hit shots from there. It definitely started as a babysitting gig, and then my dad recognized something more was there. I began lessons at age 6 had my first tournament by the time I was 8.

What do you spend your time doing when you’re not golfing?
When I am not golfing, working out, or studying, I love to catch up on my TV shows and movies. I think this summer I saw 11 movies? Yikes…

Do Northwestern guys ever treat you differently knowing you’re an athlete?
When guys first hear that I golf, they usually ask me for a lesson or try to show me their swing. I think playing golf gets me more respect because golf is stereotyped as such a “gentlemen’s sport.” When thinking about golf, people think Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson- men. The amateur side of golf is predominately male, so when a man hears a woman golfs, they usually think that it is pretty impressive and are interested in hearing more about the women’s side of golf.

Do you prefer athlete guys to fraternity guys?
Athletics is a big part of my life so I would have to say I am drawn to athletic guys. They don’t necessarily have to be an athlete, just athletic. I have always hung around an athletic group of people; in high school, some of my closest friends were male athletes, and my ex-boyfriends were athletes.

What are some of your guilty pleasures?
Being from southern California, I am surrounded by quality, authentic, greasy Mexican food; I love good Mexican food, and it’s one of the things I miss most about San Diego. Some of my favorite TV shows are Law and Order: SVU, Project Runway, and Modern Family. I move through the day to country music. I will never turn down a bowl of java chip ice cream, ever. And I love shoes.

How fun is it dressing up in adorable golf outfits??
I love my golf clothes! At Northwestern we’re sponsored by Ralph Lauren, and we’re without a doubt the best dressed team at our tournaments. I think my golf clothes have definitely shaped my outfit choices and personal style outside of the golfing world too; Ralph Lauren is currently my favorite brand, and I would like to think of myself as having a preppy kind of style.

Why HC loves Devon:
She knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to go after it, even if she has to make some sacrifices along the way. Despite her demanding schedule she still manages to have a carefree spirit and always looks put together on top of it all.  Unfortunately for the guys out there, this girl’s already taken!
