Name: Derek Tsang
Year: 1st
Hometown: Bellevue, Washington – a suburb of Seattle
Major: Undeclared, thinking about Math, Physics, and/or English
Relationship Status: With my high school sweetheart of almost three years
Dream career: In my mind, there’d be nothing more whimsical, challenging, and fulfilling than working in a physics lab or at an observatory
Savory or Sweet: Savory
Vanilla or Chocolate: Vanilla
Ideal meal: Dimsum with my grandma!
Most played song on iTunes: Collapsing at your Doorstep by Air France
Why did you choose UChicago: The warmth of the community, the city, and the rigor. I could not think of a better place to grow.
City you want to visit most: Pallet Town, or maybe Hong Kong. My dad grew up there (not Pallet Town) and I feel like I need to see it to really get him. Also, China’s awesome.
Favorite class this quarter (so far): I prefer the work from my math and physics classes, but Readings in World Lit has by far the best class periods – I’m constantly surprised and provoked by my professor’s insights.
Famous figure you’d most like to have dinner with (dead or alive): David Foster Wallace. Infinite Jest is perhaps my favorite book, and, hence, David Foster Wallace my favorite (famous) person of all time.
