Thomas Sutton: Under Par, Over Achiever

Year: Redshirt sophmore
Hometown: Montgomery, Alabama
Hobbies/Interests: I like playing sports, hanging out with friends.

Meet Thomas Sutton, UAB’s athlete of the week and member of the varsity men’s golf team. UAB men’s golf team is currently ranked in the top 15 nationally, and Sutton is individually ranked 57th with an under-par average of 71.1. Out of this season’s three tournaments,  he has had two top-10 finishes and one top 15 finish. (Not a bad start!) Sutton also carries a 3.27 GPA and 

HC: Congrats on top 8 in the nation, how does it feel to be a part of that?
TS: It feels good to be ranked so highly. We have a good team and its fun to be in contention in every tournament.

HC: Tell me a little about the season and how you’ve been playing.
TS: We started out with a win which was a great way to start, and I’ve been playing well also which is fun.

HC: What’s the strongest part of your golf game? What’s your weakest?
TS: The strongest part of my game is my full swing. My weakness is chipping.

HC: How do you balance school, golf, and a social life?
TS: It is tough to balance golf with school. I get to know my teachers and they work with me, and im also taking two online classes which help. 

HC: What do you anticipate for the rest of the season for both you personally and the team as a whole? 
TS: I would like to make it to nationals this year as a team, and I would like to just keep improving and see where that gets me.

Jaime is a junior at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. There she is the captain of her varsity golf team and a journalism and English double-major. She is an active member in the Student Athletic Advisory Committee where she helps organize volunteer opportunities and social functions for student-athletes at UAB. Jaime enjoys cooking, entertaining friends, reading/writing blogs, fashion, and of course, golf. She aspires to eventually write for a major magazine or write chick-lit books.
