How to Wear Sneakers Without Looking Like You Just Left the Gym

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

Once upon a time, I hated sneakers. LOATHED them. I thought they were just for people who were lazy and had no style or for those punky mall rats that you see hanging out at Hot Topic wearing black Converse (yawn).

However, one day my view changed forever. For my birthday, my boyfriend David decided he would take me shopping since I’m “difficult to buy for”. We headed up to the Philadelphia Premium Outlets in Limerick, PA and while we were looking around, I stumbled upon the Converse store. My mind was blown when I saw all of the different materials, colors, and patterns that were on these sneakers, so I got two pairs.

David bought me this pair:

However, he REFUSED to buy this pair:

So I did.

“How can you like them?” he protested. “They are the tackiest things I’ve ever seen.” Well, I guess that’s what it takes for me to like a practical and comfortable shoe. I was so inspired by my fun kicks that I decided to put together a few looks that I’m dying for that include some awesome sneakers.

Look #1: Downtown Saturday Afternoon

These geometric print high tops are AH-MAZING. I love them even more with skinny jeans, a flowy, casual top, and boho yet uptown accessories.

Look #2: Sporty and Edgy

I think this look is very Rihanna-esque, it packs a punch! As soon as I saw these great Lacoste sneakers, I had to base an outfit around them (because isn’t that what all girls do?) The pleather leggings are very rocker glam as is the statement necklace. Prepare to not just turn heads, but snap necks in this ensemble.

Look #3: Preppy Weekend

Look prep-school cool in glittery sneakers, a fabulous casual dress, and a magenta blazer that you can’t help but smile when you put on. Tortoiseshell bangles and big sunglasses add to this polished outfit.

Look #4: Concert Chic

A loose white tee balances out the edginess of the black sneakers and shorts, and the adorable Betsey Johnson accessories make it even sweeter.

Look #5: Comfy Cozy

Again with the pink! I love Nike’s vintage tennis feel of these sneakers. Pairing them with skinny jeans and a cool zip-up make your go-to for lazy days a little more fashionable, and adding a funky head scarf, big hoop earrings, and tan sunglasses make it absolutely fabulous.
