Love Halloween, but don’t have the money to buy a $50 polyester costume that will probably fall to pieces anyway? Check out these costume ideas that are easy to do yourself and require minimal props. Don’t be afraid to experiment with face paint and makeup- these are great ways to make a lot of impact with little cost. Happy Halloween!

1. Gothic vampire- Throw on some black clothing, maybe cut up a black t-shirt and use safety pins to put it back together and buy a pair of fangs!

2. Period costume- Renaissance, flapper, disco, Mad Men, 80’s jazzercise – instead of dressing up as a specific character, you could simply go as a certain period- the possibilities are endless…

3. Nationality Costume- Warning: these can become offensive, so be culturally sensitive. Native American, Mariachi band, Inuit, Oriental, Hawaiian, Safari, Arabian, etc.

4. Rave fairy- Dress in all neon and find yourself a pair of wings, a tutu, and you can buy body rhinestones at Michael’s to decorate your face.

5. Iconic movie character- Channel this years’ popular movies by dressing like Bella Swan (plaid shirt?), Harry Potter, or one of the hilarious characters from bridesmaids.

6. Oompa Loompa- Wear white pants, a black shirt, white suspenders, a green wig, and paint your skin orange!

7. Mime- Wear all black, white gloves and paint your face white.  Be wary, you cannot speak the entire night. This costume is a big commitment.

8. 16 and pregnant- Sport some cut offs, a cut up t-shirt, and pregnant belly for this ridiculous costume.

9. Jersey shore- Tease your hair, wear you best clubbing clothes and be generous with the bronzer.

10. Katy Perry/ Nicki Minaj- Wear crazy clothes (corsette, anyone?) and a blue wig!

11. Deviled egg- Dress in all white. Paint a large yellow circle (or cut one out of paper and glue it) on your shirt and buy some red horns.

12. Mummy- Dress in all white, wrap yourself in toilet paper, and wear scary makeup (I suggest lots of black eyeliner and dark eyeshadow).

13. Mermaid- Wear a green maxi skirt and a blue bustier with some goggles around your neck.

14. Tourist- Hawaiian shirt plus white sunscreen on your nose and a disposable camera.

15. MORE DIY: Where’s Waldo/ Senior citizen/ Zombie/ Mario/ Peewee Herman/ Sponge bob (you need a cardboard box to paint yellow)/ clown

16. Group Ideas:
Holidays- Santa, leprechaun, Easter bunny, fourth of July/ Uncle Sam, the list goes on….

17. Pac Man- Pick one or two people to be Pac-Man or Mr. and Mrs. Pac-man and get together a group of monsters, “dots” and pieces of fruit.  Throughout the night, have fun chasing Pac-man or being chased by monsters.  HOO doesn’t love a good game of modified tag at a party?

18. Spice Girls- Classic!

19. Pokémon- This one would require more work and a lot of imagination but I have a feeling it would be hilarious.  Think about getting a group of friends together for this one – one person could be Ash and “own” all of your other friends who dress as Pokémon characters.

20. Crayons- Very simple, everyone wears a different color (I suggest a big solid color t-shirt with matching tights or leggings).

21. Powderpuff Girls- As simple as bows and matching dresses!

So if you’re still feeling a bit wary about your Halloween costume, just use one of these great ideas and you’ll have yourself a knock-out outfit in no time!
