A Very “Bliss”-ful Sunday

Last Sunday, I was provided the opportunity to go to Bliss spa in the W Hotel in downtown
Chicago and get a treatment of my choice. Since I was slightly rushed for time (I had a problem set and essay waiting to be completed, or worse, started), I decided to go the simple route and opted for the “bliss hot cream manicure”.

With an appointment set at 12:30, I took the CTA and was dropped off several blocks away from the W hotel. While approaching the hotel entrance (which, by the way, is beautifully decorated with a sparkling blue mosaic), I spotted the separate entrance and elevator for Bliss spa attendees, a white room encased in glass with a cartoon girl greeting you in her fluffy robe. I thought it was a cute touch that the elevator had a button directing you to “Bliss”, which I suppose is meant to be both literal and figurative.

After checking in with the front desk and gawking at the tremendous lake view, I was told to browse the selection of nail polishes which was comprised of a variety of essie and OPI brand polishes. Though I initially selected a dark crimson hue, in the last-minute I reached for OPI’s “Are We There Yet?”, a bright melon color that comes across as pumpkin orange or highlighter pink depending on the lighting. Soon after, a bliss spa employee greeted me and began my manicure. It was at this stage that my hands entered “bliss”. As I watched a show on the TV posted in front of my chair, my hands were wrapped in steamed towels coated with lotion, a rather heavenly sensation, and then prepped for the polishing process. A half hour later, my digits were looking better than ever, the color matching the autumn leaves perfectly. These cute, decorated fingers then munched on a donut on the walk back to the bus stop. Though I was aware that returning to campus meant having to face a monstrous pile of work, as I was exiting the spa, I felt nothing short of fabulous.
