Indiana University Dance Marathon is the 2nd largest student-run philanthropic organization in the nation. Since 1991, IUDM has raised more than $12 million for the kids at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. Even though this is such an amazing cause, standing for 17-36 hours is not easy.Â
Here are some ways to prevent you from dropping to the ground halfway through the marathon.

Learn the line dance. Committee members teach the dancers a 9-minute dance throughout the marathon to help keep everyone motivated. Even though it may seem overwhelming at first, it is incredible how it all comes together at the end of the 36 hours. Trust me, you won’t want to miss this.

Participate during rotations. There are a number of activities during the marathon to help keep your blood pumping such as kickball, dodgeball, and basketball. Staying active will keep your mind off of how long you’ve been standing, and will make the hours go by quickly.
Change your shoes often. Bring at least two different pairs of shoes with different arch supports. Your feet will need to experience different structures to keep them from getting too stiff. Oh, and don’t forget to bring multiple pairs of socks!

DO NOT caffeinate during the marathon. You will crash.
Shower. And I mean a lot. Showering, styling your hair, and doing your makeup will take up the most time. It is not uncommon for dancers to take anywhere from 4-10 showers during the marathon.

Last but not least, have a good attitude! IUDM is an amazing organization, and everyone participating is doing great things for the kids. Listen to the Riley stories and interact with the adorable kids at the marathon. You will get irritable, you may cry, but it is all worth it to dance for the children who can’t.
