Important message to all Georgetown students – never fear, Captain America is here! An anonymous Hoya takes on the identity of the famous superhero every weekend to keep the students at Georgetown University safe.
Known to many as simply Captain, Captain America patrols the streets of Georgetown (in costume of course!) on the weekends providing various services to students in need of help. From fending off threatening strangers to walking students (who may be, ahem, a little intoxicated) back to their dorms at late hours of the night, Captain responds to any distress call.
Captain assumed his heroic mission within the first few weeks of the semester.
“Captain America has always been a hero of mine. I saw a need that, you know, people were afraid to call SafeRides, or DOPS or GERMs to help deal with situations that needed that. Captain America provides a friendly stranger scenario. You know him even though you don’t actually know him,” he said. “Whatever the people need, I’m there to help out.”
Captain’s choice of superhero identity was anything but arbitrary. According to Georgetown’s newest public hero, Captain America resonates more with people.
“Superheroes are superhuman just by their definition, but Captain America is really more human than super. He can’t fly. He can’t shoot webs out of his hand. He’s just a good guy there to help the people out. You can connect to him better I feel,” he said.
Sometimes the call of duty can lead the Captain into some sketchy situations. At one point Captain diverted a heroin addict who had been following a group of girls. Even DOPS has required Captain America’s assistance. When a man at the front gates was threatening Georgetown students, Captain America distracted him, enabling officers to arrest him.
So, who really is this mysterious savior? As he describes himself, he is just a regular Hoya. “I’m the same guy struggling through Econ class, the guy who enjoys watching Hoya basketball, the guy who enjoys a nerdy political debate. I’m a regular guy just trying to help out and do my part,” he said.
Captain says that he knew Georgetown was the right fit for him. His favorite aspect of the school is the sense of family. And in true Hoya fashion, as a side note he adds, “And the basketball.”
As a student in the School of Foreign Service considering majoring in International Politics, Captain says he recognizes the importance of keeping an international perspective even though his alter ego represents America. On campus he is involved in a variety of political organizations.
Captain leaves students with these words, “If you see me on the streets don’t be afraid to shout out. I’m always there to help.”
There you have it Hoyas, Captain is the man to call. Watch out Jack the Bulldog, Georgetown students just may have a new hero now!
