Hello HC! When I was brainstorming on what to write about this week, it was all too clear what I wanted to talk about. As a small town girl destined to live in the city, living ten minutes by train from Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, could not have been more perfect. This city definitely has my heart and even after visiting Paris, Rome and London, it is still one of my favorites.
The layout and size of Stockholm, along with its unique architecture, are some of the key components that make this city one of a kind. Stockholm was built on a cluster of fourteen small islands, making boat rides a huge attraction to tourists. From the water, you can get a great view of this architecturally amazing city. Unlike other European cities, constructed in shades of gray and white, Stockholm’s buildings are anything but dull. They are tastefully colored in rich hues of orange, yellow and green.
Stockholm’s size makes almost everything accessible by foot. As a tourist you can see everything from Gamla Stan, meaning “Old Town” in Swedish, to the royal palace in a day’s time. I especially loved the “Old Town” of Stockholm. Strolling down the narrow brick streets lined with 17th century houses and shops really gives you a sense of what 17th century Europe was like. Just outside of the Old Town is the royal palace, which is still used by the king today. The structure is known for its simplistic beauty and sits facing the water; it is naturally a major tourist attraction.
Filled with coffee shops, night clubs, restaurants and more, this is a city bursting with life. Swedes value taking time during the day to sit and socialize with close friends and family. Regardless if it is an afternoon coffee or a late night dinner, city cafés and restaurants are always bustling. Many of my afternoons were spent sitting in cafés and talking with friends. These are still some of my fondest memories of Sweden.
However, it is not only the physical aspects that make Stockholm so special. As a fashion lover, I was constantly noticing the chic new trends that were all around me. The City is filled with designers that are constantly producing new and innovative fashions. Especially over the past decade, Sweden has become a leader in contemporary design, keeping up with fashion capitals such as London and Paris. Ikea and H&M are just two examples of largely popular Swedish developments that are making themselves internationally famous.
Next time you consider traveling abroad, definitely do not pass up the opportunity to experience this marvelous city. Stockholm will win you over with its beautiful sights, historical landmarks, inviting culture and even better shopping. I know I am eagerly awaiting my chance to return and relive everything Stockholm has to offer.
