I’m not quite sure about where you all are from back home, but I’m about a 40 minutes from Philly by car (without traffic) or train. I love venturing to the city for concerts, especially at the Electric Factory or Festival Pier – they’re my favorites. In fact, I was fortunate enough to attend four concerts this summer! Anyway. Being in Lancaster isn’t quite the same; I’m not used to being nearly two hours from Philadelphia, or having major artists bypass Lancaster without a second glance. I miss my city. But a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon a nice little club/concert venue in downtown Lancaster known as the Chameleon Club.
A friend and I scored a great deal on tickets to see Parachute and Kate Voegele, so we decided, “Why not check it out?” It was only about a 15 minute drive from campus. The artists put on an excellent show, and I was really impressed with the club – it was a nice, little standing room only venue with great sound and lighting. Maybe it’s just me, but I prefer smaller, standing room only concerts because of the greater intimacy between the artists and their fans. If only the concert had lasted a bit longer.
This week, I don’t have a specific event for my readers to check out, but I want to inform you about the Chameleon Club so you can keep an eye on the concert calendar and maybe catch a show or two. While you’re not going to catch many artists from the Top 40 in Lancaster, the spot offers a wide range of musicians from those who are featured on the radio like Matt Nathanson, Parachute and Dashboard Confessional to others who are new, up and rising local bands from right around the area. Tickets are generally inexpensive as well (typically less than $30), so you can enjoy a night out with music without emptying your wallet.
Not only does the Chameleon Club host concerts, but it also contains a club as well, known as the Lizard Lounge. It hosts different music-related events during the week such as karaoke and small concerts, and has dance parties and DJs every Friday and Saturday night. These events, however, are limited to those 21 and over.
So why not check out the Chameleon Club’s calendar and see if there are any shows you would like to go see? Or maybe choose one you don’t know in hopes of discovering some new music? Either way, it’s a win-win situation. It’s super easy to get to – about a 15 minute drive from campus down PA-999. But those without a car don’t worry – it’s also easily accessible by Millersville’s bus system as well. (Just make sure you don’t get stranded in the city after the last bus run!)
