Black Dance Repertoire

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Binghamton chapter.

Meet the fabulous and talented group, Black Dance Repertoire.

These girls take on the definition of DIVAS on Binghamton’s campus. Why? Because not only are they great performers they’re also women who strive to help out Binghamton’s community with their talent.

Black Dance Repertoire was founded in 1985 by four women with a vision of bringing the art of black dance to the university. BDR is a multi-racial ethnic dance group that performs different genres of dance. Some of these genres include Hip-Hop, Jazz, African, Latin, and Modern. They perform in different events hosted by campus organizations – this year they’ve performed for Culture Shock, J.U.M.P’s banquet, and B.L.A.C.K Unity’s hair show.

These performances kicked butt and showed off once again that BDR’s purpose continues to be to entertain the campus community while showing off dance in all its forms.

The work doesn’t end on campus.

These girls are also involved within the Binghamton community. One activity I had a pleasure to witness was BDR, assisting Binghamton High school in a dance event.

BDR is one of those groups at BU with a motivated group of girls that can not only dance extremely well but are also assisting the community through their talents. And they have created a tight knit community of their own as well.

“BDR is more than just a dance team it’s a family,” Ambre Avery said about the group.

The Black Dance Repertoire’s annual dance exhibition, EXPOSE’, is a show that features not only the dance creations of the organization but a host of talent and will be in the spring semester.

Raven Rivera is a senior at Binghamton University majoring in English and Rhetoric with a minor in Theatre. After living on Long Island all her life, she made the move to upstate NY and is enjoying the snowy weather. At Binghamton, Raven is the president and editor-in-chief of the newly SA-chartered publication, Her Campus Binghamton. In her spare time she enjoys watching entirely too much television, romantic comedies and Disney movies, and preparing for her American Idol auditions one day. She is currently an editorial intern for iaam.com and in the future, hopes to move to NYC and be a head writer/executive producer of an awesome television show on ABC, NBC, FOX, or Bravo (really, any will do).
