At 7:45 p.m. on a Thursday night, you could easily hear an echoed pin-drop on the first floor of Baker Hall. But if you dare to climb the first staircase up to the second floor, hang a right, and open the heavy glass door of The Gladys Schmitt Creative Writing Center. You will step into an entirely different envinroment.

Buzzing with an excited, pizza-eating crowed, “The Glad,” as the center’s name has been coined, is the perfect locale for The Creative Writing Student Reading Series. This past Thursday, Andre Price, Carolyn Supinka, Brian Sherwin, and Noelle Crochet read their selections of their own work. From love stories to provocative political statements to reflections on drinking a cup of coffee, these artists put on a stellar show.

This semester, seniors, Caroline Kessler and Kyle Rood, have hosted the Creative Writing Series. Caroline reflects, “Last night’s reading was a great mix of exciting readers and respectful audience members. There was an atmosphere of warmth and friendliness which Kyle and I can’t always plan for, but we love when it happens.”

Though the crowd usually consists of fellow writers and artists, the reading series is an excellent and fun opportunity for students of any major to hear the work of emerging writers. Korinne Mills, a senior psychology major interested in poetry, commented, “There was an electric variety of poets and poems and these types of shows allow students from different backgrounds to experience the hidden and sometimes overshadowed creativity here on campus.”

The next and final reading of the semester will take place on Thursday, December 1st at 8:00 in The Glad (Baker Hall 260). Don’t miss out

Julianne Grauel is a sophomore Professional Writing major at Carnegie Mellon University and is originally from the California Bay Area. At Carnegie Mellon she is a peer tutor for writing and an active sister in her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta. This past summer, she interned at Gentry Magazine and hopes to work for a magazine after college. Julianne loves football, sushi, sunshine, and dance parties. She probably consumes far too much Red Mango froyo and can’t get enough of Project Runway. In her free time she likes to travel, watch sports center, take spinning classes and, most of all, shop.
