Between midterms, papers, friends, boyfriends, and getting enough sleep, it’s hard to make time for extracurriculars in college. But once in a while, there’s that guy or girl who seems to have time for everything. Their life seems completely balanced, leaving you to wonder what tips and tricks they know that you don’t.
Suzanna So is one of those girls. Since her first year, Suzanna has been extensively involved on campus. Now in her fourth year, she has managed to move up the ranks, becoming President of of the PanAsian Solidarity Coalition (PanAsia) and Administrative Director of Rhythmic Bodies in Motion (RBIM). Aside from her RSOs, Suzanna is also a research extern at the Adult Eating and Weight Disorders program at the University’s Medical Center and a Student Programming Assistant at ORCSA.
Why so much on top of her schoolwork? Despite the endless duties that come with her administrative positions, Suzanna’s non-academic organizations provide a healthy outlet for stress. “Especially at a school like UChicago, you have to explore your hobbies or else you’ll get depressed from the workload,” she explains.
“And plus, it’s a different kind of work. It’s outside work that you choose to do, so it’s very relaxing.”
As a result of her healthy outlook, Suzanna has managed to bring about some of UChicago’s most memorable events. In addition to planning RBIM’s Spring Showcase (which had over 200 performers last year), she managed to invite Internet sensation Wong Fu Productions to campus for a talk. Her contributions to campus life have not only made her time at UChicago more enjoyable, but they have also encouraged students to take a break from their studies and have some fun.
But what’s Suzanna’s secret to balancing everything she loves? How can she have time for everything?
“Google Cal is my best friend,” Suzanna responds without hesitation. “I’ve always got it open on my computer because I check it all the time. When you have that many overlapping meetings, you must have a reference point to keep track.”
Girls, time to break out that Google Cal.
