Demi Moore is calling it quits with Ashton Kutcher.
After a passive-aggressive tweeting battle, noticeable red carpet absences, Moore’s weight and Kutcher’s cheating scandal, Moore submitted a statement to the Associated Press last night, announcing that they are officially headed for divorce.
“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton,” Moore said in a written statement. “As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation.”
Kutcher, who unfollowed his wife with the handle @mrskutcher on Twitter, responded minutes after Moore’s announcement, tweeting, “I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK.”
The two celebrities tied the knot in September 2005 to much surprise since Moore was 16 years his senior. But things took a turn for the worse quickly after reports surfaced in September that Kutcher had an affair with 22-year-old Sara Leal in a San Diego hotel on the couple’s six-year wedding anniversary.
Kutcher defensively denied the story, tweeting a reference to the Public Enemy anthem, “When you ASSUME to know that which you know nothing of you make an A** out of U and ME.”
In happier days, the couple used Twitter to post playful pictures of their marital bliss, but rumors of infidelity and marital troubles kicked off a barrage of back-and-forth tweeting attacks between the two, including thinly-veiled hints of their oncoming split. In early September, Moore tweeted this photo of her naked back with the message, “remember…..you’ve got your own back.”Â
In the months that followed, the two were the focus of much hype in the media, from Kutcher not wearing his wedding band in this YouTube video to Moore’s weight struggle, dropping down to a reported 98 pounds, which is considerably underweight for her 5′ 5” frame. Despite public declarations that all was well, the couple had reportedly been living apart for months and sought multiple Kabbalah sessions to mend their marriage, including a camping trip last month.
“Ashton and Demi have separated and the marriage is over,” an insider source told Star. “Ashton was a serial cheater, and Demi just couldn’t take it anymore.”
