It’s easy to get yourself caught in a couch-potato slump when leaving the college scene and going home for break. But, there are very few chances to get away from Iowa City and you have to utilize them all. So here are some tips to making your Thanksgiving Break awesome!

  1. Sleep! – Everyone knows that at college we have deadlines and cram sessions just about every day. To make room for all that studying, something has to give – our sleep. So, while at home be sure to have some quality time in bed and rest up for finals week.
  2. Call up old friends – Sure, technology makes it easy to keep in touch with people from back home and friends going to different schools, but nothing is better than face-to-face interaction.
  3. Eat – The holidays are the only time of year that it is acceptable to completely stuff your face and then take a nice long nap after. So make sure to load up on turkey and stuffing and worry about getting back in shape at the Rec Center when you get back to school.
  4. Family Time – Whether it’s going shopping with mom or curling up on the couch to watch football with dad, spend some time with the family. Being away from home really takes a toll on your parents and when you get home they want to see you. Make some memories.
  5. Exercise – Get outside in the beautiful fall weather before the snowflakes begin to fall. I know I have been missing my puppies back home and they never deny me a walk around the block.
  6. Shop – Don’t forget about Black Friday and all the great sales that happen throughout the Thanksgiving week. With winter approaching, everyone needs an updated wardrobe. Get out and buy that new sweater you have been eyeing or a warm pair of boots for the upcoming snowball fights and sledding adventures to come.
  7. Homework – Finally, don’t forget to keep up with that schoolwork. That paper isn’t going to do itself and you will feel much better getting it done and out of the way. Don’t wait until it’s too late and your busy schedules resume.

Thanksgiving break is what you have been waiting for since the start of school, its your first week long getaway of the school year and you need to make every moment count!

She has grown to love magazine writing and editing and if she somehow can't land her dream job (to be Carrie Bradshaw), she wouldn't mind settling for a job in the magazine industry. If nothing else, she hopes to attend law school somewhere in the Bay Area out West, her favorite place to be. Since the age of 15, Emily spent her summers in California, doing internships and falling in love with San Francisco. Some of her other interests include her 4-month-old longhaired wiener dog Henry, blogging, celebrity gossip, sushi, Private Practice, fro-yo, being a journalism nerd, and anything involving good conversation with good people. Although she's not exactly sure of her plans for the future, she knows journalism will somehow be the driving force in her career.
