Pitt CollegiettesTM Get It Right, Even When Celebrities Get It Wrong

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Sometimes, celebrities are caught in indescribable, confusing outfits that make us wonder how they ever left the house in such an obscure outfit.  They’ll wear bizarre, sloppy, ill-fitting pieces that will immediately subject them to “Worst Dressed” lists and public scrutiny.  How is it that people surrounded by such fashion and helpful stylists still manage to look so strange?
Though there may be no simple answer, I’ve recently noticed some fashionable Pitt CollegiettesTM sporting celebrity “wrongs” in the right way.  Though their outfits aren’t exact, these Pitt ladies transform the ugly celebrity looks into fashionable, good-looking outfits…all on their own!

Katy Perry (far right) usually incorporates fashion with sass, sex appeal, and playfully girly styles.  Her fun sense of style inspires girls to play with fashion and make it their own.  However, Katy was recently photographed at MTV’s EMA awards wearing this not-so-cute pink outfit.  Maybe she pulled inspiration from the “Pink Ladies” in the 1978 classic, Grease, but I don’t think this look works, at all.  This tight, sunglass-print dress with a light pink, studded leather jacket and sneaker heels isn’t very fashion forward and the pink hair matching her pink lipstick doesn’t do much for her either.  Katy’s skin tone looks washed out by the overall color scheme contrasted by dark eye makeup.

Now, here’s how this Pitt CollegietteTM spun Katy’s look and got it right.  Casey Gordon (above left), a sophomore, wears a simple, cool sunglass graphic tee with a blue blazer and medium-wash jeans.  Instead of blasting light pink on every aspect of her look, Casey added a pop of pink with a soft scarf that goes great with her light blonde hair.  Her pink eye shadow suits her glowing skin well, and a cute pair of black zipper heels really dresses up the look.  Casey, unlike Katy, could wear this look for various occasions like a fun dinner with friends or even a casual night out.
To get Casey’s look, try this Asos t-shirt with a Forever 21 blazer. Pair these with your favorite jeans and accessorize with a bright, coral Forever 21 scarf. Finally, finish the look with simple, lace-up heel boots from Urban Outfitters.  These shoes also give off the same vibe that Katy’s do but in a much cuter way!

Another celebrity outfit gone wrong is Nadeea’s animal-print dress at the 2011 Grammy Awards (far right).  This unflattering dress is, to be blatant…is ugly. Her strange choice of accessories, from the gloves to the bright wig, doesn’t help either.  At the end of the night, Nadeea ended up on the “worst dressed” list.  Nadeea, in my opinion, looks more trashy than she does classy.

But Brittany Rentz (above left), a sophomore at Pitt, recently wore out an animal-print look that made her look hot and classy at the same time.  Brittany chose a strapless, black and white animal print top and broke up the bold print with a thick black belt that flattered her frame.  To complete her look, Brittany wore a sexy black skirt that’s the perfect, appropriate length.  Since the print is already so lively, Brittany kept her accessories clean and simple and wore her hair in pretty curls.  Brittany, unlike Nadeea, got the animal-print look so right!
To get Brittany’s look, try this animal-print Topshop tank over this simple, top rated Urban Outfitters mini skirt. This J.Crew belt, worn at the waist like Brittany’s, will compliment the look. Finally, throw on these Steve Madden, black and gold flats and you’ll be set to rock this nighttime outfit!

Ladies, I think it’s clear that we should start taking fashion advice from some girls right on campus!
