Gomez: What is the LEGOS Competition?
Chorley: This is a design competition in which the proceeds go to public schools in Oklahoma City. The theme this year is BLOCK PARTY and here we are to design outfits inspired by and made of Lego blocks; hence a Block Party.
Gomez: How many designers are in the team?
Chorley: I, along with Rebecca Vang and Hannah Lunsford decided to enter the competition just for fun. All the teams where paired up with a local celebrity, and we had the opportunity to work with singer/song writer Ben Kilgor and also Ben & Noel, in which own the shoe Gypsey.
Gomez: What is the inspiration to your garments?
Chorley: We took characteristics of nature and animals then used them to compose a subliminal and subtle vibe. The color story we used the most included black, browns, greens, and hints of greys.
Gomez: How long do you have to finish the products?
Chorley: The competition only allowed us to work on the project for a month, and that might seem like a long time, but as students we can only work on it during open lab or on our free time, which is rare. We had to meet our other partners, pick our inspiration and style, and then prepare an avante garde, day wear, and evening wear composition. Our models were the Oklahoma City Thunder cheerleaders and this was really exciting yet a challenge.
Gomez: When was the competition?
Chorley: The competition was November 12, 2011 in Oklahoma City.
All the money from fashion show benefited the OKC EduCare Program, which serves 200 disadvantaged children ranging from infancy to five-years-old with year round education programs.
