Ever feel like you have a passion, but no direction? Do you know what you want to do and where you want to be after college, but you just aren’t sure how to get there? Carolina Creates, a student organization that was started at UNC earlier this year, may provide a means by which you can express these passions to others and begin to connect with a surrounding community of people who share your interests.
Holden Thorp implemented Carolina Creates as part of the Student Innovation Team in an effort to tap into the vast amount creativity that is embodied in many different ways by the students at UNC. Its goal is to encourage the growth and collaboration between different campus organizations.
Carolina Creates is a student organization on campus that focuses on fostering creation through connection. Carolina Creates strives to achieve this goal through four campus initiatives: Carolina Creates Music, Carolina Creates Arts, Carolina Creates Writers and Carolina Creates Global Initiative. Each initiative has been making attempts to increase its visibility throughout campus by hosting events and shows at popular spots that are usually frequented by students.
Carolina Creates Music’s main purpose is to provide as many resources as possible to encourage student musicians to continue to work on making music their career. There are so many talented musicians on campus, and CC wants to bring them out of their classrooms and garages to use the resources that UNC has to offer. The main way that the organization tries o achieve this goal is by organizing shows around campus in visible areas such as the Pit, Student Union, and Rams Head Plaza for these student musicians to play. This makes music more available to the average student, and helps Chapel Hill continue to grow as a cool music scene.
Senior David August, director of Carolina Creates Music, answers questions (below) to provide an in-depth look of the initiative. He said, “the thing I enjoy most about Carolina Creates Music is seeing the response from students after listening to a concert. It’s awesome to see the comments on Twitter and Facebook about how much they enjoyed the show.
Who does Carolina Creates Music represent on campus?
Carolina Creates Music represents the student musicians. We want to help them gain experience and build them a music resume by giving them highly attended shows around campus, pictures and videos to help launch their music careers. The end goal is to be able to book them in venues around Chapel Hill and events on campus.
What do you hope others take away from Carolina Creates?
We hope that these musicians can use the opportunities and material that we give them to build their own music careers. As a musician, it is so difficult to make the initial push to become known, so we want to help grease the wheels by providing available opportunities. Once they have a few successful shows, the road should be smoother for them. I also hope to make the music scene more available to the average student, so they will be able to easily become immersed in it. Chapel Hill has so many great student musicians and so many resources for these musicians. All we have to do is put these readily available parts together to create a vibrant music scene.
