Beauty Products That Come From Your Kitchen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

We all love to splurge on beauty products, but similar products can be found in your kitchen for next to nothing. Baking soda, olive oil, and eggs can transform your skin and hair with little effort and time. Give these at home tips a try and to save yourself time and money!

Microdermabrasion Face Scrub
Baking soda and water are all you need to make your skin look clearer, brighter, and younger. Mix two tablespoons of baking soda with one tablespoon of water to make a paste. Then, scrub onto clean skin to smooth away dead skin cells and imperfections! I tried this myself, and it worked really well. If you don’t have any baking soda on hand, it is less than a dollar at the grocery store. So cheap, and it works amazingly!

Hair Mask
Winter is officially here, which unfortunately means dry skin and hair. To fix split ends and add moisture, make this simple hair mask with olive oil and honey. Combine 3 teaspoons of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of honey in a saucepan and heat until it boils. Let it cool, and apply to clean dry hair for 30 minutes. Your hair will be transformed! It will be commercial worthy with tons of shine and softness. This also makes your hair grow faster!

Teeth Whitener
After seeing this trick on Pinterest, I decided to try it and I have seen results. All you need is Hydrogen Peroxide and a few q-tips. Dip a q-tip in the hydrogen peroxide and apply to teeth for 30 seconds (be careful not to swallow!) before brushing teeth. After a few times doing this, you will see a difference in the whiteness of your teeth. Hydrogen peroxide is one of the main ingredients in whitening strips, but this is much cheaper and faster!

Hand Mask
One thing I hate about winter is the dry, cracked hands I get. One easy solution is to take a little bit of olive oil or Vaseline and rub it into your hands before bed. Then, put old socks over your hands so you and your bed won’t be covered in oil, and voila! In the morning your hands will be amazingly smooth and crack-free. Hint: this works extra well if you throw the socks in the dryer for a couple minutes, the heat and the oil make your hands super soft!

Lemon juice facial
For acne prone or sensitive skin, this mask works wonders. All you need is non-coated aspirin, lemon juice, baking soda, and water. Mash up 6-12 aspirins and add lemon juice until it forms a paste. Add baking soda and water as desired to improve the consistency. Apply to your face and leave on for ten minutes, and you will have clearer, more beautiful skin!

All of these remedies can be made from things that are most likely already sitting in your kitchen! They are fast, cheap, and work extremely well. Try them out!
