Here on the campus of Florida A&M University, hip-hop can be heard throughout the campus. Yes we have many talent shows dedicated to those with musical gifts and spoken word talents, but rap is a talent too. There is anyone at this school that hasn’t heard a rap battle heating up on the set at midnight. It’s unfortunate that rap has gained a bad reputation in our generation. Our students are making an effort to keep this movement alive and positive.
On Dec. 1st, 2011 I attended a rap/beat battle in Gibbs Hall brought to us by the Florida State rap cypher club. In my opinion, this was an entertaining event with upbeat energy and a semi large crowd. This reminded me of a scene straight out of “8 Mile”; the crowd was hype and the event was real authentic. Good and bad emcees hit the mike creating a good vibe. This event was free for the audience and $5 for contestants. The winners won cash prizes ranging from $50 to $100. There were multiple elimination rounds leading to the grand finale with the top contestants chosen by a panel of music producer judges.
Battle Rapper Laces was vocal in expressing his opinions. As he stated when he’s in the zone “don’t take it personal, but after the battle everyone can be friends.” Students from across the tracks at FSU were in attendance and our schools mingled successfully. Rap battles are underrated and less publicized, but is still positive events for our school and community.
FAMU is now working on creating a cypher club to premiere in the spring of 2012. Katia Moyer, a 1st year business administration student, said “the battle was very entertaining, kept me on my feet, and I’m glad the winners were given a prize.” Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I will definitely be going back to Gibbs to the next cypher.
