One girl can make a difference.
That’s the idea behind Strong Women, Strong Girls, a non-profit organization that encourages girls and young women to become strong and independent. The program partners college women with elementary school girls, focusing on mutual empowerment for all women and built on a foundation of six core values: love and support, integrity and respect, discovery, balance, a diverse female community, and SPARKS or feeling the inspiration of working toward a common goal.
SWSG started out in 2000 as a student group at Harvard University, founded by then-freshman Lindsay Hyde. After receiving national recognition as features in like Glamour, Seventeen, and The Boston Globe for their efforts, they officially launched in 2004 as a nonprofit agency.
Since then, SWSG has partnered with over 90 elementary schools and community center sites to provide programming to over 1,400 girls in Boston, Pittsburgh and Miami. SWSG is also partnered with 14 colleges and universities, providing over 300 college women as mentors.
At Her Campus, we’re backing this organization and we are asking you – HC readers – to help!
Want to help contribute, collegiettes™? Besides making a donation (visit their funding page here to see how your donation can make an impact), during the month of December, Her Campus will be donating 20% of the profits from our I Heart HC Tees to SWSG national organization (not directly to any of its college chapters).
