I  have never really been one to drink coffee, until recently that is. Entering in my first year of college, I had only tasted coffee once or twice. I never understood what the excitement was about. To me, it seemed like people had developed such absurd addictions to a drink! For example, my mom has to have a cup of coffee every day or she starts to get jitters and headaches. No joke. Many of my friends in high school and college drank coffee to stay up and do papers or homework but I was always such a night owl that I didn’t need coffee to stay awake. And the price for coffee? It seemed so crazy to go to a place like Starbucks and pay four dollars for a drink unless it was a smoothie.

Slowly but surely I found myself visiting Starbucks more and more with my mom. I started out getting nothing then I moved to hot chocolate and later to a Strawberries and Crème Frappuccino. Once I found myself slowly losing the ability to stay awake during the day, because I was up all night, I went looking for a solution. My first try was Red Bull and yuck is all I can say. The taste was nowhere near appealing to me. Then the Coca-Cola Company came out with an energy drink/soda named Vault. I was completely in love. I remember drinking a bottle before a big test and I was bouncing off the walls! I was so hyper off of that 20 oz. bottle that I did the chicken dance in my seat before the test started to try and get rid of some of my energy.  Good times. After learning that a complete bottle was too much for my system, I decided to drink the bottle in small portions then it got discontinued. My feelings were hurt and now I needed a new solution.

I tried apples since they were supposedly a good source of natural energy, didn’t help. It wasn’t until two weeks ago when I almost fell asleep, while standing at work, that I realized coffee was my solution. I work in the Towson Mall so on my break I decided to go see what Starbucks had to offer. I was so overwhelmed with all the choices and the sales associate could tell. He asked me what I was looking for and I told him something flavorful and possibly sweet. He suggested the new salted caramel mocha and gave me one for free! (Plus side….he was cute!) At first, I was very hesitant because for some reason I had bad memories of how coffee tasted. After that first sip, I knew I was in love. I was so upset when I could see the bottom of the cup through the hole in the lid and I had the energy to finish my day. I’ve been back to Starbucks several times since to get my salted caramel mocha. I haven’t been very egger to branch out to new drinks but I’m sure over time my Starbucks addiction will grow. I just hope it’s not to the point of my mother’s because I am on a college student’s salary!
