About the Dorm
You’ve probably heard of JL by now—that dreaded all girls freshman dorm that’s known for being far away from everything, quit, and did I mention all girls? Well, believe it or not JL does have it’s benefits—it’s right by the boot, it’s a great place to study, and if you get stuck here, you’re bound to bond with your hallmates about how upset you were when you found out your dorm assignment. But Brennah is here to tell us why she actually wanted to be placed in JL and why she continues to love it.
About the Resident
Brennah is a freshman from Oklahoma City, majoring in neuroscience and German. She chose to make Tulane her new home because it’s “culturally awesome”. She loves everything about this city from the jazz to the French Quarter. Additionally, she has family in the area, which is nice for Brennah since she wanted to stay close to home.
For those of you who wouldn’t dream of listing JL as your first choice—JL was Brennah’s second top dorm, right after Wall. According to Brennah, JL does have its benefits, especially on the weekends when the dorm is close to wherever she wants to go. It may not be close to your classes on the Academic Quad, but it you find yourself in JL you’re sure to have a nice view of The Boot. Despite it’s neighboring, basically on campus bar, JL tends to be a quiet, good place to study, sure to save you the long walk to Howie T.

Brennah’s Home Away from Home
When Brennah decorated her room, nothing she used was really bought with the intent to go in a dorm room, besides her colorful bedding that is. Basically everything has a story behind it. Brennah even has a ringed tail cat that symbolizes an Indian legend. Sound intense? Well, look above Brennah’s bed for something a bit sweeter. Her grandma drew the pictures hung on her wall. “My mom and I didn’t inherit her talent,” joked Brennah.
Overall, Brennah’s room has a calm, homey feeling. Brennah opted to use many muted colors instead of getting anything too bright. Her bedding brightens up the simple space. The curtains Brennah’s aunt helped pick out also make the room feel more like a tiny home than a dorm room. Putting some curtains up can be a unique touch to a room. “The only way id be able to survive college is if it felt more like home”. And with decorations laced with memories, a simple layout without an overwhelming color scheme, and some curtains Brennah has made a cute but comfortable little home for herself.
Make it Your Own
- Find fun patterned comforters at Urban Outfitters or Anthropologie!
- If there’s anything in your room you think you’ll miss, take it with you to college—not everything you bring to school has to be bought specifically for your dorm room.
- Frame drawings for a nice wall decoration.
- Get some curtains!
- Buy yourself a big comfy dorm room chair. They’re perfect for having friends over or even getting some reading done in.
- If you’re placed in JL don’t freak out and remember that you may love it as much as Brennah does!
