Last night kicked off the first awards show of the season – the People’s Choice Awards and there was plenty of pop culture pomp and celebrity glamor in honoring the year’s fan favorites in movies, music , and television at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.
Among some of the head-turning styles debuted on the red carpet were Julianne Hough in a stunningly gold sequined backless dress, Demi Lovato in a form-fitting peach silk chiffon Marchesa gown, and Vanessa Hudgens in a darkly dangerous Jenny Packham halter dress. Glee starlet Lea Michele was the talk of the red carpet arrivals in her flapper-inspired, white, fringed frock. Katy Perry was noticeably absent from the red carpet, who was slated to be a big winner of the night with a whopping seven nominations in total. It would have been her first public appearance since her late December split from Russell Brand.
The CBS program was hosted by The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco and featured musical performances by country queen Faith Hill (“Come Home”) and pop starlet Demi Lovato (“Give Your Heart a Break”). The night kicked off with a parody skit of Cuoco and her The Big Bang Theory co-stars followed by a mock stage stint between Cuoco and Neil Patrick Harris who went on to win favorite TV comedy actor.
Everyone’s favorite funny girl Emma Stone won the first award of the night, crediting her mom in the audience and her own personal philosophy. “Stay true to yourself,” she said to the crowd, donning an emerald green Gucci blazer and black trousers. “There is no other reason why I am up here today.”
Not surprisingly, best daytime TV host went to Ellen DeGeneres who wore her typical pants suit paired with white tennis shoes. She chose to “not thank people” in her usual unconventional style of giving acceptance speeches.
Glee star Lea Michele bubbled over her awarded title of favorite TV comedy actress, giving all the “Rachel Berrys” of the world a shootout while the title of best TV drama actress went to category shoo-in Nina Dobrev from The Vampire Diaries.
Favorite comedic movie actor went to Adam Sandler who gave a downright weird acceptance speech thanking his public school teachers aptly named “Mr. Pit Stains, Mrs. Cat Hair, and Ms. Smells-Like-My-Grandmother’s-Closet.”
In an unexpected turn of events, Chloë Grace Moretz beat out the Harry Potter crew for the coveted title favorite movie star under 25. “I can’t even imagine that I’m in the same category as the whole Harry Potter cast and I won!” Moretz said in her acceptance speech.
Morgan Freeman won high honors with the title of favorite movie icon and earned a standing ovation. “When I found out that I’d been nominated for the first-ever People’s Choice movie icon award, I decided to look up `icon,'” Freeman said. “Here’s what I found: The first definition said an icon is a tiny picture on a computer screen that represents a file.”
Regardless of being absent amid her divorce drama, Katy Perry let her presence be known, coming out as the big winner of the night, picking up five awards including favorite female artist, favorite song of the year (”E.T.”), favorite music video (”Last Friday Night (TGIF)”), favorite tour headliner, and favorite TV guest star (How I Met Your Mother). Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 was another big winner, picking up four awards including favorite movie of 2012.
