Gainesville Great Eats: Newberry’s Backyard Barb-B-Que

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Desperate for a reminder of summer amidst the dipping temperature and chilly winds blowing into town? For a break from your winter staple of soup, take a little road trip with friends over to Newberry where you’ll find Backyard Barb-B-Que. Housed in the middle of Newberry’s historic district, this restaurant has all the fixins you’ve been craving: pulled pork, plenty of hearty sides and piles of tender ribs.

For starters, order one of the typical appetizers – you can’t go wrong with fried pickle chips – or try one of the house specialties like the nearly foot-high pile of onion rings or the corn nuggets.

When it comes time to decide what you want for the main course, indecisive customers always win when they go for the combo plates or the best item on the menu; the baby back rib platter. Smoky and juicy, Backyard’s ribs are the epitome of what you would expect from a barbecue joint. You can choose from the standard hot or sweet sauce, but I recommend asking for the yellow mustard-based sauce if you want a flavor that will really boost your meal.

For sides, load up on the meaty baked beans, crunchy sweet potato fries or a Southern staple like fried okra.

And don’t even think of leaving without trying the banana pudding. Creamy, cold and brimming with fresh whipped cream, it’s the perfect way to finish off your meal.
