During our time spent in college, there are many aspects of school that we should consume our time with: class, studying and job searching. However, a very important piece of that we all value is our social life. Rikki Murray, Social Chair for Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority talks about the art of being social.

Her Campus: Do you consider yourself a “social butterfly”?

Rikki Murray: I would like to think so, I mean, we only have X amount of years at UT so I want to take advantage of having fun with my friends.

HC: Understandable. Why do you value having a social calendar? Do you think it benefits college students for when they graduate and are pushed into the “real world?”

RM: I think it gives us all a much-deserved break from the hectic school schedule. It is college after all! I definitely think it improves our communication skills and the more social you are, the more comfortable you’ll be in a new environment.

HC: So true, we do all deserve a break! Where does a social event begin? What is the first thing you do?

RM: The first thing I have to do is come up with the idea and the theme of what the party is going to be. Then we have to pick a venue that can accommodate everyone (and is close to campus) as well as a date! Then of course, there’s paper work to send and get approved from Kappa’s National Headquarters.  Then, Viola!, a social event is made!

HC: Now, exactly how difficult is it being a social chair of a sorority?

RM: It can be pretty difficult, honestly. There are a lot of rules from our National Headquarters that we have to follow. I’m also responsible for all the girls and their dates, which can be stressful. And of course, I want it to be fun, which can also be nerve-racking.

HC: That’s more difficult than I expected. Would you do it again?

RM: I already did! I actually was Social Chair for two consecutive terms. It’s a lot of fun, but it gets exhausting and I need to graduate….eventually.

If you can get your attention away from her great dress, you’ll see Rikki is drinking a Red Bull. Something has to give this socialite wings!
