Fashion Do: Let’s Hear it for the Prints!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Wardrobe staples…we all have them.  From the always conventional black blazer to the wear-with-anything pair of flats, there are some things that we simply cannot live without.  As practical as these staple pieces are, however, it’s easy to fall into a style rut.  Maybe not at first, but by the 100th time you’ve worn your black boyfriend blazer, it won’t be nearly as sharp as you remember it being.

So, how do you break out of your fashion slump?  You don’t have to wear bold colors to add an extra dose of pizzazz to your daily look.  If you’ve ever had an issue with prints, then you may want to resolve it now. Prints are currently having a major moment and won’t be disappearing anytime soon!  Conquer your fear of prints by incorporating as few (or as many) printed items as you’d like into your ensembles and let the compliments roll in!

As we transition from winter to spring, bring life back to your wardrobe essentials by turning to prints!  Whether you’re a devotee to the latest fashion trends or just want to update your style, here are three printed items to add to your closet!

The Oh-So Practical Blazer That Just Got Better

Not boring in the least, printed blazers are the answer to all of your wardrobe woes.  Featured in WhoWhatWear’s Trend Report (the ultimate resource for all things trendy!), this is one style that will be sticking around for seasons to come.

Why the printed blazer you ask?  For starters, it’s more daring and brash than your traditional blazer will ever be.  Unlike a black blazer that is often overlooked, a printed one will never go unnoticed.  When heading to class, maintain a simple look by pairing your printed blazer with skinny leg jeans and a tee.

As you select your top, try and pick colors that match the pattern found on your blazer.  To further personalize your outfit, consider layering a lightweight scarf or long necklace.  For a night out, go glam by adding a printed blazer to your favorite dress.  Black, white, and solid colored dresses are foolproof options that will always complement your new printed blazer.

Stripes are the easiest and probably the most notable prints for blazers this season.  Whether you choose to wear black and white stripes, multi-colored stripes, or skinny stripes mixed in with wide stripes, you can’t go wrong!  Striped blazers are always pleasing and look great with everything from ultra-feminine dresses (especially lace!) to a pair of blue jeans.

If you really want to make a statement (and are a fashion risk taker!) try a floral, butterfly, or graphic printed blazer.  Although, blazers with wild prints aren’t for everyday wear, they are guaranteed to add a flair of originality to any outfit!

Goodbye Blue Jeans, Hello Prints!

It’s no secret that jeans are a collegiette’s™ go-to form of leg wear.  They’re effortless, comfy and can be dressed up or down.  That being said, it’s imperative to invest in many different styles, colors and PRINTS!  Whether your style is girly and feminine or tough and edgy, there is no scarcity of prints to choose from.

Animal prints (especially leopard) can either come across as zany or ridiculously fierce.  If you’re looking to achieve the former look, then opt for leopard print jeans in a vibrant color such as magenta and pair it with loud
accessories (i.e. bangles, oversized rings, etc.).

Leopard print pants in subdued shades such as black and gray, as a rule of thumb, tend to come across as more sophisticated.  Merely throwing on a white tee and black blazer will achieve that edgy look you so desire.

For those looking for jeans that are more lighthearted and fun, floral is the way to go.  As shown in the look above, a drapey top and pretty cardigan are all that’s needed to create a femininely superb outfit.  Accessorize with your favorite baubles, a cozy scarf or a ladylike purse for maximum perfection.  Just because the weather is cold doesn’t mean this look isn’t possible; a cashmere sweater would also be a great and warm option!

Tip:  If you think that printed bottoms are too eye-catching, then think again!  As long as you select a top that complements your printed jeans, there is nothing to worry about.  Whether you take the print-happy route or keep it sweet and subtle, the result will be equally stunning.

Shoes That Scream Look-At-Me

Blazers, jeans…I think we all know what’s next.  Shoes!  Regardless of how many pairs of shoes you own, there is always room for more!  Ballet flats, heels, loafers, boots – all of your favorite shoe styles, but adorned with prints.

Here are four shoes that break the status quo!
1.  Doc Martens($130)-Floral combat boots – who would’ve thought?  These Doc Martens are über feminine and give off a cool vintage vibe.  Whether you pair them with a girly dress or ripped denim shorts and tights, they are sure to toughen up any outfit.
2.  Kate Spade($225)- Dress to impress with these preppy bow-topped ballerinas.  From jeans to pleat skirts, this is one shoe that has endless wardrobe options.
3.  Topshop($60)- Animal print is the new neutral.  Leopard print loafers (my personal favorite), ballet flats and pumps will keep you covered for every occasion.
4.  Modcloth($45)- Give your black pumps a break and wear these chunky floral heels instead.

Looking down at your feet and seeing a ridiculously cute pair of shoes is priceless! Make any outfit a little extra-special by donning a pair of print-tastic shoes!

Don’t let the monotonous days of winter get you down!  By mixing it up and investing in printed blazers, jeans and shoes, spring will be here before you know it!  Happy styling!
