What is Club Zamana?
We are the largest South Asian Organization on campus with about 800 members in our general body. Our main goal is to promote South Asian culture on campus. We do this by acting as a facilitator for the South Asian groups on campus and putting on events that bring this community together as well as the Columbia community as a whole.

What is your position and what are some of your duties?
As Vice President, Barnard, I’m more of a generalist. I oversee the planning and execution of our events. Our largest event, Tamasha, is actually going to be on March 30th. Tamasha is the second largest show on campus (we are right behind The Varsity Show) and the largest cultural showcase on campus. It’s a great show during which all of the South Asian Dance teams (CU Raas, Columbia  Bhangra, Columbia Dhoom, Taal), CU Sur (the South Asian fusion a capella group), and other Columbia and non-Columbia acts perform. We also serve free Indian food during intermission!

How did you get involved with the Club?
I wanted to stay in touch with my South Asian culture so I joined the Z board during the second semester of my freshman year. Zamana has definitely been the highlight of my college career: it has fulfilled my desire to stay in touch with my culture and given me the opportunity to work with some of the most incredible people.

What are some of your outside interests?
I definitely subscribe to the work hard, play hard mentality so when I don’t need to hit the books, I’m out and about in the city with my friends. As much as I hate this term, I have to admit that I’m a pretty big “foodie”–I love going downtown for dinner.

If you had one day with anyone, who would it be and why?
Howard Schultz– we need to have a chat about getting Starbucks to deliver.

How do people interested in Club Zamana learn more?
Be sure to email us at zamana@columbia.edu and request to be added to our listserv. We’ll be sure to send you emails about our upcoming events. Also, come to Tamasha on March 30th! It’s gonna be a great show that you won’t wanna miss!
